Is Kevin Hart as big of a star as Eddie Murphy was in the 80's?

I know most of this board can't stand him, so we're all downplaying him. He's not Eddie's level obviously, but what he is doing is pretty fukking major considering the climate.

I'd argue Kevin is good at what he does, but Eddie is legendary. Let Kev do what he do and stop with the crab in the barrel shyt most of y'all are talking. Anytime a black dude can do what he's doing, let that man eat and put his team on until his star burns out.

I think y'all really fail to understand what he's doing despite the industry, and being black in the industry.
I don't have a problem with Kevin Hart doing big things, I just want multiple black people to be able to do it.

It's always one black person at a time being pushed super hard above everyone else.

It's not a crabs in the barrel mentality. I don't want Kevin Hart to be held down, I want more black people to get pushed along with him.

Do you guys think Kevin Hart is as famous as Eddie Murphy was in the 80's?

This question is for the older dudes on the board who are old enough to remember how big Eddie Murphy was in the 80's.

Not even close. Kevin Hart might be doing very well financially, but Eddie ran a decade. He single-handedly saved the SNL franchise (and Loren Michaels will admit that), someone already posted some of his hit streak. Eddie had people quoting him like Chapelle skits but he went a lot longer in his prime.

He's one of those guys so big that producers will never give up taking a chance on him in a comedy role.

Kevin Hart IMO is more about being that comedian who's smart about managing his career and money. He's like Louis CK (I don't think he's all that funny though) because he created a blueprint.

Kevin Hart not even as big as he was 2 years ago. So I doubt he'll still be talked about and remembered yearsss down the road.
Eddie can still sell out an arena

It is crabs, white people don't shyt on Dane Cook. Indians don't shyt on Russell Peters. They just turn their shyt off.

It's as simple as that.

Meanwhile Kev puts, Affion Crockett, Corey Holcomb, and a slew of other known and barely known comedians and actors in his shyt. He paid for Patrice Oneal's funeral...homie paid his dues, puts on for his people, and pays the hood back everywhere he goes.

Hart may be average to slightly above average as far as black comedians go, but he's business savvy enough, and safe and marketable enough that if his movies continue to make bank and his shows continue to be stadium status...homie could put together a little mini empire together on the low.

I can't hate on it...I just can't.

I'm not 'hating' on him though. Just this constant push behind him, only him and no other black actors. I don't have a problem with Kevin Hart.

Breh remember back in the day when you'd see Sanaa Lathan, Larenz Tate, Morris Chestnut, Omar Epps, Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Vivica A Fox, etc constantly in black films and those films actually came out in the theater? That's the kind of stuff I want. Multiple black people getting love on the big screen again. I know other folks are acting but it seems like there's a constant push behind Kevin Hart and only him.

Seems like the only place where black people can actually do stuff is on TV shows and Netflix. Only 'allowed' to get so big.

They don't want them to be too big because paying out 20 million plus back-end on total ticket sales sucks for a movie company.

Shyt, Eddie himself is indicative of this. Pluto Nash anyone?

And then have the movie bomb...that's why what Kevin Hart is doing is some major shyt, small budget and it's making 3-6 times on its ROI.

The industry has changed, Eddie was the last actor ever to sign an exclusive movie deal with a company. His made more money when adjusted for inflation, but the studios put more money in their films and marketing when adjusted for inflation too.

And believe, I'm not caping for Hart either, I can quote Raw and Delirious line for line...greatest stand-up ever to me.
No, kevin is incredible for what he has accomplished...I mean dude started as a beanie siegel/state property extra...basically an extra to a bunch of other extras...and blew like crazy...much respect for that.

Hollyweird victimizes itself tho...the model after the 90's became strictly roi focused. This results in quick upfront profits but also accomplishes the long term deterioration of the business.

Hollywood today has absolutely no star power....now a days franchises and boredom sell movies, not stars. Kevin creates his own star support with his media company (smart move) ...but if u don't have that type of engine and are simply relying on movie houses to light your star for you that's a bad mistake...(hint hint michael b jordan)....studios no longer care about the artist...it's simply movies and money for them.

Not saying that 'you' personally are hating. There just seems to be this thing with black people that once you ascend to the top, we collectively break that person down.

I just think black people aren't in a position socially to break anyone down, when that person is making all the right moves.

shyt happens when people want to compare someone's success to another. Every week someone on TV compares LeBron to MJ as if LeBron's accomplishments can't be acknowledged on their own. I don't think anyone can honestly say Kevin Hart isn't a superstar but the whole premise of this comparison was only meant to demean the lesser icon. Kevin Hart didn't have a chance really and you can't really fault the people who the question was asked.

Hollywood always has been about ROI. There's just so many things that circumvent the money that Hollywood used to make namely increases in home theater Tech and bootlegging. I can't really fault them for putting out 15 comic book movies a year because most movies barely break even or the years to get that return.

There's a larger argument I won't get into, but bottom line is, Hart has a machine behind him and he's generally using it for good albeit watered down comedy.

This goes to prove how much we need shows like Comic View and the like. Where's the new generation of black comedians?

But to answer the question, no.

i feel you but if you think about it. Kevin hart really isn't out there like that. He has Think like a man 1 and 2, Ride Along 1 and 2. And about last night. That's it. Unless you wanna count his stand ups.

Bad comparison he definitely gets shyt on, I've heard a few white people refer to Kev as the new Dane Cook. and not in a good way. Jeff Dunham gets it bad also. Theres also Adam Sandler. Just because a few black people on forums shyt on Kev, it doesnt mean every black person hates on him. He's loved from my experience. Internet hate isnt equal to outer world hate. If it did, Kev wouldn't be selling out stadiums.
