So KDOT was fake indie to establish an emotional connection, and that ultimately benefited how he was perceived as an artist for the rest of his career? Plausible theory......
But I don't even remember a "rise from obscurity" story being used to push GKMC. I just remember folks hearing it and being like
![krs :krs: :krs:](https://www.thecoli.com/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/krs.png)
including me. Maybe all the "Is he or ain't he Indie" arguments was just a hip-hop forum phenomenon. I wasn't on The Coli, or SOHH, or any other website when GKMC dropped, so I didn't see the phenomenon of users using his "rise from obscurity", as a tally on his "real artists" board.
Again, I heard the name "Kendrick Lamar" here and there, but never heard his music. So GKMC had a "damn I BARELY know who this cat is, but he's now my fave mainstream rapper" reaction.. I just happened to listen to a leaked version of GKMC on YouTube with no preconceived opinion on the artist. Couldn't have been more organic than that. First time I heard Swimming Pools, I thought it was dope, but it didn't make me wanna go to Itunes and purchase GKMC. I didn't even know that was the name of his album, until I listened to the leaked YouTube version and saw the cover art.
