They're management. They manage. Of course they help get him hot. That's their job. But they're not a label.
I mean if a slow and steady progression into the industry is a "plant" then I guess it's a plant.
I see a clear differential between someone like Kendrick and Chance. Chance didn't just pop up out of nowhere, start getting co-signs from legends, getting called the greatest, and getting plastered all over magazines. The guy hasn't really even done anything yet.
Chance is a biggest industry plant ever BECAUSE he's not sold an album. Dude's clout is strictly due to INDUSTRY connections.
It would of made more sense to get signed by a label and that label does it job to market and promote.
But Chance don't have a single label to back him, but able to dominate the Grammys to which is for and votered by INDUSTRY INSIDERS? He's able to get these commercials and endorsement on his own accord? Because of free mistakes? Curren$y does the same thing in sending free music and simple tour and isn't mainstream at ALL because he shunned the industry. There's no bigger plant than Chance the Rapper.

the term plant came during American Idol when a record label would sign an artist...have them audition and act like they werent signed and get them far enough in the competition so by the time they are eliminated they have a career waiting for them.

It make sense though. A plant is someone who pretends to be independent while dropping a project for marketing purposes (organic come-up to boost acclaim and impression of said project) but is actually signed. It's hilarious how posters try to change the definition to ramble some random shyt e.g. to protect Kendrick but hate on Rocky. When Rocky's one of the very few that isn't a plant
