Is Jayson Tatum really THAT much better than Jaylen Brown?

No he's not. Jayson Tatum has a good handle / ball security for his size :dame: He can hit "tough" sidestep 3s at a higher rate than Jaylen. He gets to the line at a higher rate than. Jaylen, he's a more prolific scorer than Jaylen and he's a better free throw shooter than Jaylen.

Jaylen is a better, more efficient scorer than Tatum. It sounds like blasphemy but it ain't. Jaylen is also a difficult shot maker, especially on turnarounds and turnaround fadeaways. He's starting to introduce the Jimmy Harden step back too. He's also a 3 level scorer, unlike Tatum who is not a scorer from the midrange. Jaylen is a better driver whether it be scoring on drives, passing on drives to find open teammates or for assists, and committing fewer turnovers / offensive fouls on drives. He also has hit some clutch baskets at the end of close ballgames moreso that Tatum.

Jaylen hustles more than Tatum. He boxes out more. He grabs the tougher contested defensive rebounds than Tatum, the true mark of a good rebounder. He defers more rebounds than Tatum does so the numbers get skewed a lil bit. He contests more shots than Tatum. He usually will defend tougher guys on defense than Tatum. They're both really good on defense and Tatum improved this year but Brown is more of a lockdown corner to Tatum's zone corner / free safety, to use a football analogy.

The team will still defer to Tatum tho. Even Ime. I heard him say a few weeks ago that the C's had two guys who were great shooters in the midrange in Jaylen and Jayson. I was like :gucci: cuz Tatum is not good in the midrange. In fact, his fg% from 10-16 feet has decreased every year. His fg% from 16-3P has oscillated. It's 39.7% for his career. His free throw shooting brings his TS% up compared to Jaylen but still not as good.

Ultimately, it comes down to the media and the fanbase. In Boston, the media and fans are mostly white. So they gon gravitate more to the lightskin Tatum, which is understandable. They won't gravitate towards Jaylen. I've heard them talk about Tatum as a "natural" and how Jaylen is an "athlete" and had to "learn the game." None of that shyt is true.

Jaylen, when he's not losing the ball, is one of the most fluid, smooth, explosive athletes in the league. He has a some absolutely nasty in and out, stop and go moves. He is pound for pound the best righty, left handed finisher in the league. He has shot over 70% at the rim 3 years in a row. He has better shooting percentages from the field, the rim and the free throw line in the playoffs than he does in the regular season. As a result, his WS per 48 if u a lytics lover, have increased every year in the playoffs. None of that is true of Tatum. Tatum shoots worse from everywhere in the playoffs, including the field, rim and free throw line.

What it comes down to is Jaylen tightening his handle, which will allow him to get more touches and make more plays, cuz he's a better "pure" passer than Tatum. Tatum is a better playmaker right now cuz he handles it more and is more secure. Jaylen also needs to continue to improve his free throw shooting. He had improved it for 3 years in a row before this year. If he can get up to 80% in the regular season, look the fukk the out.

tatum seems a bit more polished on offense and ball handling. brown seems like a better defender though. both of these guys are 25 or younger. c's got two great back to back 1st rounders. they gonna keep being a problem in the east especially as they gel. bucks and nets got their work cut out for them.

NAH HE ISNT,
HE JUST HAS MORE OF AN
ALPHA MENTALITY BECAUSE
HE WAS MORE DEVELOPED AT
A YOUNGER AGE...

BUT BROWN IS BECOMING
MORE OF A KILLER EACH SEASON
AFTER STARTING OFF A 3 & D GUY
LIKE KAWHI.

BROWN SHOULD HAVE
WON THAT BULLshyt ECF AWARD TOO.

Jaylen has been they most consistent player this playoffs and u could really make the case that he's been their best. He was their best player in every ECF he's played with the exception of 2017. I thought he shoulda won the award this year but Tatum was "worthy" enough and he needed that for his ego. Jaylen is my pick for Finals MVP if the C's can pull it off.

ya mans Tatum isn't blindingly fast, nor moving people out the way. He isn't jumping out of the building either...he is not a dynamic athlete, just a skilled scorer with height...he's in the Devin Booker group

Boston has done a great job building a good team with very few weaknesses that can overcome bad performances from him, whereas with a lot of true number 1s, teams can't overcome their bad performances most times.

Tatum ceiling is obviously higher but Brown is more consistent game to game in these offs. Brown gotta tighten that handle to go the next level:ufdup:

Tatum plays point guard at times and handles the ball twice as much as Jaylen Brown. Tatum gets trapped all game and draws the best defender from the opposing team. All the attention Tatum gets makes JB game easier. Defensively Tatum is better and more versatile.

Tatum has more turnovers 79-58 but he also has more points 498-437, Assists 119-68, rebounds Brown has 4 more 125-129, Tatum steals 25-24 blocks 17 Brown 9. Their plus minus are +145 for Tatum, +95 for Brown and let’s not talk about free throws.

Glad both of them are on my team and I never understood why people always want to pin them against each other but for people who watch the Celtics every game no question who the best player is.

Brown is a great player still improving and we are glad he’s a Celtic.

  • Tatum playoffs touches per game: 82.5 (1568 total)
  • Jaylen playoffs touches per game: 63.7 (1211 total)
  • Tatum time of possession per game: 5.5 minutes
  • Jaylen time of possession per game: 3.9 minutes
That's not Tatum handling the ball twice as much.

  • Jaylen playoffs turnovers per game: 3.1 (58 total)
  • Tatum playoffs turnovers per game: 4.2 (79 total)
  • Jaylen playoffs touch to turnover ratio: 20.9
  • Tatum playoffs touch to turnover ratio: 19.8
On a Per touch basis, Jaylen actually turns it over slightly less than Tatum does. If you do turnovers to touches, Brown is at 4.8% which is lower than Tatum's 5.0%. They're a lot closer than you think.
