I don't think people mean "we could be best friends" when they say likable. I think usually when they say likable people mean "I like watching them".
Tony Soprano was not a pleasant person but whether he was killing somebody or fixing a sandwich or feeding ducks it was good TV cuz he was such a great character. Likability is what makes you root for the bad guy...its a part of character development.
Breaking Bad is a great show becuz of the plot and the suspense. But when the characters aren't "doing sh!t" they are for the most part all garbage. The fact that its a small cast makes it more obvious. When Mike, Gus or Saul come on the screen you know something good is gonna happen. The rest not so much...
I understand that sentiment, but the ways that folks throw that around doesn't sound the same at all. For instance, most of the characters in this show are still very likeable to watch, even if their characters aren't "likeable" because of how great the actors are and how well they all play off each other. Most of the characters outside of the really minor ones are quite well written, developed characters. Like even Walt Jr. whom most have wrote off has not having much going on, is still funny to see him get in both of his parents' ass when the times call for it.
I disagree with the characters all being garbage unless something big is going down. If anything, I believe the show is as much about the little things and subtlety as it is the major suspense moments as well. But I somewhat understand folks that don't like moments like that in their programming.
