I gotta disagree with a couple things. Skylar and Hank both have good character arcs, and evolve over the course of the series.

Did they really? I feel like Hank is the same dude he was in the beginning. He got hurt and went through a little depression but he got through it and is the same old Hank. Skylar I guess you could make a better case for her having a nice arc as far as the affair, becoming involved with Walt's empire, hating Walt, becoming suicidal, and then coming around in the end. But she's still a bytch. :youngsabo:

I dunno if you were watching when the show first started but most people hated Hank. Thought he was a one dimensional macho dikk head.

That started to change around season 2 when he was over in Mexico. His PTSD made him seem human. You realized most of that macho posturing was an act because dude didn't have it all together.

Let's put it like this, if that shootout with the cousins from 3 happened in season 1 people would want Hank to die. By season 3 he had enough layers and had opened up enough as a character that people were worried he'd die. Now in season 5 most people are like "I hope Hank stops Walt".

You could say his character development is directly related to how bad Walt has become, but public opinion of his character is damn near 100% opposite from the first season. A character like Marie or Saul, I can understand. Walt, Jesse, Skylar and Hank all have definite character arcs.

I'm not disagreeing that Hank has a character arc, and my sentiments towards his character went pretty much how you put it (except I'm not sure if I want him to catch Walt) but I just feel the character didn't evolve all that much. We got to see there was more to him after the twins attacked him, but do you feel Hank taking a shyt in Walt's bathroom comes off differently than Hank playing alpha male in season 1? Skylar shows a clear evolution from when we first met her, but I feel with Hank we got to see a different side, but the character in essence stayed the same. I feel like Hank is there for Walt to interact with him and with each interaction we see how much Walt has changed. From Walt being meek and deferring to Hank to Walt standing his ground, and even using Hank to find out how close the feds are on his tail.

It's kinda hard to quantify Hank's arc, or how much he changed, because fan perception of him is directly tied to Walt's downward spiral. For example, if Hank found the book in season 1, people wouldn't want Walt to get caught. In season 5, are people happy he found the book because they like him and want him to win, or they just hate Walt and want him to fail?

Regardless, I think he evolved just enough to matter. Walt Jr. is a good example of a completely static character. Dude basically only exists to eat breakfast. :russ:

Am I the only cat that doesn't really care whether or not if I find characters on shows/movies "likeable"?

Could be just me, but that shyt don't phase me much like 98% of the time. It's not like I'm trying to fukk em or be friends with them. All in all, these are just fictional characters.

Most people don't care. And for this show specifically it's kind of a prerequisite because Walt is obviously meant to be a villain in the end. Some people feel like they gotta empathize with the characters. I dunno why. :yeshrug:

Word. Ionno about the most people not caring, as I've generally heard such complaints on and offline. :yeshrug:

Yeah, writing, acting, story/plot, suspense and to some extents unpredictability (sometimes predictability is good too) means waaay more to me than empathy when it comes to cinema. I'd also rather have multi-dimensional characters than just relatable/likeable ones. BB has all of these attributes in spades.

I don't think people mean "we could be best friends" when they say likable. I think usually when they say likable people mean "I like watching them".

Tony Soprano was not a pleasant person but whether he was killing somebody or fixing a sandwich or feeding ducks it was good TV cuz he was such a great character. Likability is what makes you root for the bad guy...its a part of character development.

Breaking Bad is a great show becuz of the plot and the suspense. But when the characters aren't "doing sh!t" they are for the most part all garbage. The fact that its a small cast makes it more obvious. When Mike, Gus or Saul come on the screen you know something good is gonna happen. The rest not so much...
