Garvey was trying to get the c00n Elites out the paint in Liberia, and offered to pay off the Liberia national debt at there time which was like 5 million bucks. I believe Garvey presented that he would pay off the debt and in return wanted some designated land to set up shop, but his eventual plans were to try to become president. WEB Dubois got word and pretty much snitched to the Liberian govt and told them dont accept Garveys money and told them he was planning to overthrow them.
I always found it interesting that the Dubois Talented 10th mentality is what they push hardest at HBCUs. It would have been fine if it was "use the best and brightest as the vanguard to build a separate nation" but instead it was on some "show whites we are smart too so they will respect us"
