I feel like the mixtapes and freestyles really made him cause his name was buzzing strong than even the average rapper in 01-02 just when that scene was about to hit a boom and then Em and Dre took him to next level pushing that stuff on their own mixtapes and soundtracks with Wanksta and then In Da Club was the hot single to go to the next level

Maybe if he doesnt sign to Aftermath I could see him going to another label or doing the independent thing and getting a buzz and some gold to almost platinum albums and definetly he would have some regional hits. I think he would have been in the just above Styles, Kiss, Budden and just under Fab depending on the label, think Dipset level. Again his buzz was so hot it really would have depended on the label plus his own drive.

Wonder what would have happened with Game. He had a mixtape buzz in 03 but not as strong so I wonder if he would have stayed shelfed unless 50 came through or would they have eventually seen he could make albums too

So many what ifs with that decade

I keep telling brehs, that black unity and power shyt don't mean anything in rap. These dudes learned the games from snakes and became snakes themselves. Diddy, Irv, Steve Stoute...this is what they do.
dog...its the same in every area.

EVERY successful black businessman (older cats) ive talked to said the same thing...
...it will be your own that cuts you first...unless there is a age difference.

yes, because this album......with the buzz of a highly publicized trial, and released after multi-million bidding war blew up huge

50 himself talked about how low quality this album was.

Shyne could sell a lot more if he didn't fall off and if the music was good.

I think a lot of people would disagree

the Shyne trial occurred when Puffy and J-lo were two of the most popular stars in the country.

It was covered nationally(and internationally) because of that, & made Shyne known to the audience who knew Puff and J-lo
, the silly big hat style that kids were wearing in that era was directly started AFTER Shyne was shown walking to and from court wearing his hat that way
102952-shyne_617_409.jpg

and when the record companies were scrambling to exploit his story sign him...Shyne got Pac-like coverage

shyne-7.jpg

The buzz was HUGE.....the full court press/media coverage was on.

shyt just flopped.
Shyne had buzz but not the music to back it up for one. Two Shyne mainstream wise was already an established artist with a so-so debut album. You can't compare that to a brand new artist that had the catchy songs to back up the buzz.

Why all the ethical talk in this thread about holding another man down or irv being a snake?

This is business! If a new and hot upcoming rapper is threatening to take away the popularity of your product and is openly shytting on you, you try and shut them down. Or you buy them.

Wouldn't you do the same?

The same way tech companies act in the business world.

I guess im just :old: now in my way of thinking.
That's a bad business practice.

If someone is talking negatively against you the best thing to do is

A. Ignore them altogether. Rappers who ONLY diss fizzle out

B. Reach out to them. Stop the beef in its tracks early on (Like LL tried with Canibus)

C. Destroy them musically

Abusing power comes back on you. This is an industry where 50 was DOING HIS JOB by dissing them. Talking shyt in hip hop is entertainment whereas doing it other fields is considered unprofessional and immature.

I think a legit argument could be made that Power of the dollar was better than the first Shyne album.

wait...so 50 cent was a brand new artist?

you ever see the video of fat-face, pre shooting 50 cent for "your life's on the line" ?

agree that the shyne music didn't match the hype, but the coverage of the trial was extensive.....was covered by news outlets and entertainment outlets because of puff and j-lo

50 was new to the general public.

Shyne already had mad radio/video play with "bad boy" with Barrington Levy or whatever and that "that's gangster" track.

Most people's introduction to 50 was 02. Most people's introduction to Shyne was years earlier.

Shyne was also largely criticized as being a bootleg Biggie

I mean to the mainstream audience 50 was a new artist. The audience needed to go diamond like 50 did. Hardcore hip hop fans knew who 50 was but Power of the Dollar was some underground unreleased shyt.

shyne had a handful of popular songs but overall, his gangsta was always more popular than his music.

we already knew what he was after the bad boy album, so most people weren't gonna go out and purchase him rapping from a pay-phone.

he dropped a few bangers on that album but people were just more interested in fawning over shyne the person, rather than shyne the rapper.
