Todd McFarlane is going full steam ahead on a new Spawn movie, but it's going to be very different from any interpretation of the character seen before. In an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com at Toy Fair New York, McFarlane revealed his new take on the film. He has finished the screenplay, and is currently editing it down before shopping it around Hollywood.

McFarlane opened up for the first time about the type of movie he's hoping to make, and it's a new take on Spawn altogether. Of course, the movie will be "a hard R," he assures fans, but he said it won't be a superhero, or even an action movie.

"I'd put it more into horror/suspense/supernatural genre," McFarlane told ComicBook. "If you take the movie The Departed meets Paranormal Activity, something like that."

The goal is to make Spawn as a character something entirely unique in the world of the new film.

"In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn," he explained. "Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost."

He likens Spawn's presence in the new movie to that of the lurking evil in Japanese horror films (and their Hollywood remakes) like The Grudge or The Ring.

"I think they all work because there’s only one thing in the movie that’s not normal. There’s not five things, there’s one thing that’s the boogeyman. So that’ll be Spawn," he said. "He’s this thing that just whooshes in, this ghost that moves and will f*** you up if you’re in the wrong place in the wrong time, and the rest of the movie will look real, and be this real drama. He’s just this ghost, this thing behind it."

It's a take on the character, moving even farther from the superhero comics that birthed it, that McFarlane has been wanting to explore for awhile, but it also has a practical application.

"Basically, I can make this version of the movie on a budget without crazy special effects," he said with a slight chuckle. "I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they'll let me direct it!"

:ohhh::jbhmm::why:

just make a real fukking spawn movie dude

This year will have firmly established marvel as the alpha cinematic universe once and for all.

Sony was forced to fall back and let Marvel control spider man (marvel making so much bread they even let Sony keep the revenue, let that sink in for a minute).

BvS flopped. Xmen will surely flop.

The only saving grace will be suicide squad and luckily they were smart enough to release it far enough away from civil war.

Dr Strange gonna clear between 600 and 700 mil easy.

DC/WB gonna fukk around and try to negotiate with Marvel to see if they can get a cameo in a Marvel movie next:lolbron:

And maybe if they play right..... Marvel may break them off and let Superman get a small cameo in Agents of Shield or something to boost his profile up:mjlol:

i used to hate comic book movies but mcu got me hooked
I don't know. I'm getting bored with these characters. It feels like Iron Man is the exact same guy he was several movies ago and there's virtually no development of his character.

How many times can this cinematic universe put out movies with these seemingly static characters before more people start get bored? The movies are also starting to get bloated with these characters. I got bout half way into Civil War and i'm feeling like I wish this was over now because it's too long and there are too many characters. They definitely need to scale back these solo movies to being about the character the movie is named after.

I've seen people complain about Age of Ultron too and it didn't do anything wrong really it was just more of the same. They got a good thing going but at some point they're gonna have to develop the characters so they don't feel the same every film.

I just want them to get away from the normal Avengers people and go back to Gardians of the Galaxy and other lesser known people to casuals. I know they are getting there with Thanos/Infinity Stones, but yeah, hurry up MCU.

I get what you mean, but if the comics are any indication, that's not going to happen. The cinematic universe is continuing ad-infinitum.

I think of them as episodes in a saga. The changes are always gonna be subtle and overarching for each player. Like watching Cowboy Beebop, that was 26 episodes and the characters didn't undergo any drastic changes. Captain america has been in the comics for 8 decades and his characterization changes have been subtle over those 80 years. Same with all the other characters. I think we should expect the same with the cinematic universe.
