I'm confused, why does nobody care about the citywide death and destruction in Godzilla or Xmen?

I agree with that but I'd argue that for this particular iteration of the character, he isn't that guy yet; he has to learn to be that guy as opposed to just coming out fully formed. Even the superman we know him to be in the comics now wasn't fully formed that way but he became that way over time and growth
They wanted instant veteran Superman in the movie who could stop the evil Kryptonians while helping old ladies across te street and rescuing cats out of trees so they just completely gloss over the fact that it was his first day officially on the job.

The problem, and this was my main problem with the movie, is they didn't show any type of growth or indication that he would become that guy over time. He didn't seem to care that he was doing all this damage or that people might be dying as a result so why would he care to improve at all. Bottom line if Lex Luthor had held a press conference at the end of the movie and said that Superman was dangerous and shouldn't be trusted there was plenty to point to in the movie to say he was right.

Then a reporter would say "but he saved the world from the biggest threat in the history of the planet, unilaterally" and lex luthor would go back to counting money.

Lex would reply that the threat was from his people coming there specifically looking for him and his only interest was in saving himself.

This argument ignores that the movie showed him trying to save the soldiers during the fight in Smallville, that he worked to save the entire planet by destroying that terraforming machine and that it was established before he put on the cape that he spent his adult life wandering the earth saving people.
But he wasn't conscious of property damage during a fight for his life so he must be an uncaring super-powered a$$hole.

And I've heard that argument and can respect it but my opinion is that in the middle of a fight and that particular fight, he doesn't have time to pause for that reflection and it would've been nice if it came at the tail end of the fight with Zod but then you would've erased the beat of him being angry and or sad that he had to kill Zod. And again, from what I've read, that's going to be a huge part of the next movie, dealing with the aftermath of that battle and him being perceived as a threat more than a hero because of the damage and destruction.

If they deal with it well in the next film I'll be happy but for now I think something could have been shown to indicate that's where they wanted to go with it.

This is my biggest problem with the movie also. IMO, there should have been atleast a year to 2 year gap between when Clark learns his origin/trains and the battle with Zod. The "legend" of Superman should have been built up a little more in Metropolis. No way Zod should have found Supes so quickly after he drove off in that ship at the North Pole (no way Lois should have been there either). Supes didn't even know how to fly. The original trip from Krypton took 2-3 years but Zod happens to be in the Milky Way and finds Earth in a day?:stopitslime:

That very same scene with him saving the soldiers was preceded by him moving the fight to a populated area in the first place. The movie was full of contradictions like that where he is new to the hero thing but he had been secretly saving people for years. He cares about saving lives but moves a fight from a place with only one vulnerable person past a large empty space to a highly populated area.

Saving dudes on burning oil tankers is way different than hand to hand combat with other super-powered people.

I don't even want to get into the fact that he shouldn't have survived let alone won any of the fights he had if he is just a rookie as you are throwing out there when he was up against multiple trained soldiers too strong for him to control the fights.
