i've worked with plenty of middle age hispanics and legal immigrants who felt some type a way in regards to illegal immigrants, they felt like illegal immigrants should be doing it legally.

The problem with issue based polls is that they are presented in a way that is not replicated in a politically charged setting. Often they are not presented with costing and other variables that crop up when they are debated in a public domain. Healthcare is a good example, a poll can show support for a Fed funded system but politicians are hardly campaigning on that issue as a yes/no vote , they campaign on that issue at a more abstract level including things such as taxes, personal freedoms etc hence the backlash against the ACA formented by Tea party types and talk radio. There is also a question of priority, how does one issue stake up with regards to importance if it is put up against other issues.
As for the illegals and muslims part, there is a difference between dropping the immigration stuff and using rhetoric that is anti-immigration. If you take the view that most people are anti illegals then the party that uses explicit rhetoric like Trump would get that vote before they consider a party that is half-assing on the issue. The muslim issue is the same as well, you have Fox and GOP people talking about sharia and chiding Obama for not saying radical Islamic terrorist. Chasing the white vote eventually leads to the triangulation-era of Dem politics.

There must be push back against anti Muslim rhetoric, because even if immigration from Muslim dominant countries is curtailed, how about already integrated muslim immigrants? Are their children not the ones responsible for recent terror attacks? Indignant condemnation of Islam only creates fertile ground for home grown terrorists. That's something HRC and Obama knew and because of their unwillingness to join the mob, democrats, their policies and even common sense are been sacrificed on the altar of xenophobia.

Funny, I don't see the people complaining about illegal immigration affecting wages taking up the issues of wage theft by employers, the Fight for $15, or, gasp... more radical solutions for the working class, namely, moving towards production for human need instead of profit.
That's because those people are only concerned with scapegoating and pitting vulnerable groups against each other.
Immigrants can have anti-immigrant sentiments and can scapegoat as well, just like we have Afrikans who hold and advocate for anti-Afrikan ideas.
