I just make eye contact and give a small smile (not too big though or they'll think I'm crazy)

And if it's the elderly, I give a downward nod and a smile out of respect

I know the risk of misunderstanding but it feels wrong walking past a fellow African with zero acknowledgement.

I thought ALL Black people did this and you're right if someone didn't Nod back I would be a little confused as it seems common knowledge, or some unwritten rule to nod or acknowledge another black man when out and about.

Even my white friends know it's something we do, it's normal to them so I understand your anger in a way.
