In the last year or so, look how many of the highest paid stars in Hollywood flopped or underperformed domestically

The Rock (Baywatch)
Tom Cruise (The Mummy, American Made)
Mark Wahlberg (Transformers, All The Money In The World)
Matt Damon (The Great Wall, Downsizing, Suburbicon)
Vin Disel (Return of Xander Cage)
Tom Hanks (The Circle)
Emma Watson (The Circle)
Chris Hemsworth (12 Strong)
Scarlett Johansson (Rough Night)
Emma Stone (Battle of the Sexes)
Christian Bale (Hostiles)
Chris Pratt (if J-Law failed with Passengers then he did too, Magnificent 7)
Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Magnificent 7)
Ben Affleck (Live by Night, arguably Justice League)
Ryan Gosling (The Nice Guys, Blade Runner 2049)

Some of these did better overseas so their starpower might matter to foreigners that only know a handful of American stars, but these films and the "star power" attached was :flabbynsick: in America and failed to make their budget back. And then you have guys like Will Smith, Adam Sandler, and Brad Pitt doing straight to netflix movies instead of bothering with being box office draws at all.

breh did you see that trailer?

this is a WHOLE NEW LEVEL of 'dumb'

we haven't witnessed anything like this before.

Doesn't matter man lol. One man's trash is another man's treasure. I'll never forget the sheer number of people on this very board shytting on jurassic world when those trailers came out. Said it looked like the dumbest thing ever and a Syfy movie and that it would flop. shyt ends up making a billion dollars. So yeah I don't try to read the mind of people on that kinda thing, I'll leave that for people who get paid to do it for studios

Dude lol I'm not disagreeing with you on it looking silly or stupid. I'm saying that shyt doesn't matter. My opinion on it and your opinion on it don't matter because we don't speak for the masses. So like I said, I won't be surprised if it's a hit or a flop.

When kidman was the most sought after actress in the 2000s she was doing a ton of movies you probably never heard of.

Passengers was a flop but movies like mother or red sparrow arent suppose crush buildings whats all this revisionist crap. This article is really about film choices and the fact shes not even getting "critical acclaim" any more

Blehhh, that article was sickening! I'm glad 'the movie star' is over. Give me people who can act all day, every day coupled with a compelling story and I'm happy. Cable and streaming are eating the movie industry's food with that formula. And all this guy can do is lament actors not being special anymore. Something better has come along, you are either in it or in the way.

who says those 2 things cant be achieved whilst being a draw also? Tom cruise and bruce willis (for a while) were stars who could act abd were in (sometimes) compelling movies. I dont see the problem with movie stars going to movies should feel like an event every now and then. Movies like split or nighcrawler are cool but i could easily see ppl streaming those movies. With movie stars you are glad to part with your money cuz you know you are watching something with gravitas

When pratt was thought to be the next big thing i know how intrigued i was to see magnificent 7 and passengers due to who hed be sharing the screen with.

This article seems like it is lamenting actors not being treated better than the average actor even person. :camby:
I like Chris Pratt and everything but I didn't bother to see either of those movies because the stories didn't seem compelling from the advertising. :yeshrug:
The only reason I go to the movies is for special effects or things that will look pretty in IMAX or 3D. Or the movie is that interesting which is very rare nowadays. Hollywood needs to try harder instead of lamenting a mediocre movie at best like Red Sparrow failing.

Sad but nobody gives original movies a fair shake anymore.

If it’s not based on some popular IP or starring someone big then no one is checking for it.

The top grossing movies of the year are ALL franchise blockbusters now.

Long gone are the days where a movie like RAIN MAN are a top grosser.
What about Get Out? And besides that movie what came out in 2017 that was original and deserved to make tons of $?
IPs have a built in fanbase and they earned it because the first movie they made was original or quality.

I have a theory on why Magnificent 7 flopped, The only heroes that survived were North American non whites.....audience wasn't too cool with that.
