He just doesn't have that many classic songs for the parties and clubs. "Lose Yourself" is one and there are a few others, but compare him to a Jay-Z. A DJ could rock a party for a straight hour off nothing but Jay records. When compared to the greats he is sorely lacking in this area.

:scusthov: @ the thought of "lose yourself" getting play in the club.

I agree. its what seperates Eminem from other white rappers.

I'm saying if he had black skin and rapped about blacker personal topics BUT he still kept the same skillset, he wouldn't see much success, if any at all.

nah. he just doesn't have the cuts.

we're critical of Eminem on here because we're analysts. most black people offline aren't critical about Eminem like that. hes really not even a regular topic IRL.
in fact, when you criticize Eminem, a lot of black folks' knee-jerk reaction is to respond with some sort of consolation compliment about the guy like "well hes talented tho" because they don't want to feel racist.

trust me man. if Eminem could make at least one jam per album and drop just one album that's of at least 4 1/2 mic caliber to the general urban audience, black people would be forcing him into the bottom of their top 10s, even tho that's not enough for a black rapper to crack the top 10, they would still give it to em.

black people love when white folks try to assimilate themselves into black culture. Eminem just isn't the one.

For one, it's plenty of black folk that would rank em 10-20. Secondly I don't think we are talking about the same thing here.

When I talk about Em still feeling like he has something to prove, I don't think it's that he can appeal to the same type of people that like Paul Wall. I feel like the line in question was more so trying to offset the hype of being such a pop icon and letting you know that he's here to MC, not just pick up trophies and sales records.

"don't put me up with them pop stars...."

Knowing that some people will simply chalk your success up to being white means you don't know where you really stand. There's gotta be some middle ground between him being top 5 and @Wacky D saying he's not even top 50. He want's to sit on that tier with Jay and Nas, not just commercially either. And while I feel like he does have some great projects he'll always be a tier below them IMO.

Let's not forget Ja Rule.

ehh.

he was never held in high-regard. that's why I left him out.

but yea, I was a big fan of that rule 3:36 run.

yea hes been fighting against the pop tag his entire career. I understood it back when "real slim shady" & MMLP dropped. something else that I always understood is the fact that he tries to bully his way into the top-tier on the slick, and I never fell for it. for instance the bolded. man, he has no business being mentioned in the same breath as a jay-z or nas.

theres plenty of black folk that will rank joe schmoe as top 10 all-time too. I'm sure you know what I was saying with the previous post breh.

when did I say Eminem wasn't top 50? he gets an automatic pass near the bottom of my top 50, along with the likes of lil wayne & Kanye west.

I have to disagree with the God MC and you as well. I honestly feel that if Em were black he would be a "B" level rapper at best. You know what his HUGE flaw is? His discography. Particularly as it pertains to records for parties/clubs and to a lesser extent, the radio. He just doesn't have that many classic songs for the parties and clubs. "Lose Yourself" is one and there are a few others, but compare him to a Jay-Z. A DJ could rock a party for a straight hour off nothing but Jay records. When compared to the greats he is sorely lacking in this area.

Gotta disagree with Ra. Being white has been Em's meal ticket. It's funny...at first it had to work against him. But once he established he was nice on the mic and got co-signed by Dre, his race became a HUGE boost to his career. Now White America for the first time had a rapper reppin them who was a legit talented MC. You think Em is selling 10 million on one album if he was black? GTFOH

I'm talking skills. Nothing you said negates what I said and nobody you mentioned us beyond em skill wise. You echoed what I said about content you just disagreed on the why

Back around 1999-2002, that wasn't a crazy statement. Em was on fire. But this late Em Relapse/Recovery/etc. shyt is beyond wack.
So in short he has been garbage his whole career but let's ignore this.

Cac had been carried by his lame fans too far too long. And to be honest he's been wack since the second album

Sounded like you were saying skill-wise he is the best. I disagree with that as well. He is among the elite skill wise, but better than Jay, Nas, and BIG? No. You also said his race was his only "flaw". That's crazy. His race is what gets him 10 million in sales and he has no classic albums. Flaw? It's his greatest asset.

More black people listen to Paul Wall than Eminem, and he was down with Swishahouse...freestyle kings.
Eminem, on the other hand, lost to superior black rappers in freestyle battles...using writtens.
His albums had horrible production in retrospect and he was allowed to get away with murder subject matter wise...
He also ruined Busta's "i'll hurt you" remix.
