I know a spear is better in a duel because of the reach, but you can't easily carry a big ass spear everywhere you go, this is why civilians carried swords and pistols, but didn't walk around with long ass rifles like infantry soldiers

Katana can cut through people with ease anywhere you land

and the rapier because of it's length and speed, you can run people through very quickly
