So he's Nigerian. What is he, Igbo, Yoruba? Ask him how his family feels about the Fulani and the like and whether they hire them in their business. As a Nigerian he should understand tribalism first hand.Then there is the type of industry he works in, full of d!cks. Now what is he going to do about it? He could follow your advice and find a better situation, different industry, with more enlightened people, who knows. I'm just not the type to run away, welcome challenges and have thick skin. I would savor that situation he's in to see how I could maneuver. And i am not white by the way.

This is a rant so pardon my incoherence

I'm sitting outside my office building on a break I have to write this because my life fukking sucks right now. I work at an investment bank, a very big one (JP,UBS etc)

I have a BSc, MSci and I'm CFA level two educated. I recently got hired as an associate in January. I was previously an analyst where I had little exposure and now I have my own work and serious contact with clients the reality of this is all hitting.

I left my old finance job to work in the family business for 18 months and honestly nothing will compare to working for yourself but I needed to get back to work. Working for family good but was only to help out.

Investment Banking is the worst job ive ever had. I've worked in call centres during college, retail, being a waiter but no job has made has been as ridiculous as IB.

1. It's not diverse. All the IB firms do all this affirmative action and equal opportunity big talk to make it SEEM like they're diverse but it's B.S check the directory of every main IB firm. There's like 4 black people per 100 whites.

They like EVERYONE but blacks. The tipping point was this week. I've been working with a black charity which helps place black kids in Wall Street bank internships. These kids are smart, have experience and we spend months prepping them interviews. Only one of them secured a role.

Mean while I have this new intern shadowing me today he is dumb as a brick and lacks basic common sense and he is somehow there.

I've been observing that in every division there's the same pattern (2 black men, 2 black women and that's it). I'm pretty certain they're only there to fill a quota. and legalities

You spend your days working with literally people like Don Sterling ALL my clients I'm working with on deals are ALL senile and old and you can tell the ones who don't wanna be doing business with a black dude

Last week I had to go Vienna for a day to meet a new client and you should have seen his face when I walked in

To top it all off I interviewed a black girl from another division who was great a few weeks ago and our M.D said she wouldn't be a good 'fit' meanwhile they hired some random blonde chick

The only good thing about people a black investment banker is the money but how much is it really worth though. Yes, I earn a lot but at what cost ?!

Oh and I finally get why people like @Poitier and @marcuz hate bed wenches so much. Black women are literally not rated AT ALL as in AT ALL by our clients (CFO's CEOs etc) while all the white VPs get to travel our black female VP rarely gets to travel ever. They don't see her as a 'face' for the firm.

I just think people need to stop pretending n saying the 'black boys need to study and go college''we just need to work 10 times harder'

All that 'you gotta work twice as hard' shyt our parents told us was LIES.

It's nothing to do with your degree, your presentation these people are always gonna operate the one at a time rule

Hell look at all the executives of the top banks on Wall Street. That club will never be broken. They give us just enough to not complain, I'm not naive to the fact that the good ol boys still have the power.

They really don't give us much at all. They just have the media to subdue us and they split mentally as well and gender base. Black women and men are broken and hurt and fighting the problem seems to be too great.

There's some hidden truth in that post, even if folks might not want to see. Banking is still largely the old boys group. If you're black, you're either going to be kissing a lot of ass to make them moves or you will be upright and seen as a bad fit. Folks really want you to scrap out here. Doubly worse for black women.

That's why I respect folks like LeBron, starting up businesses giving established black folks a chance to earn a place in the work force.

Great post OP, great reading everything in this thread.

I dont want to try to understand things I couldnt understand( basically trying to say I dont know your life ), but I started my career with an internship this summer and it seems like the rich ivy leagers are worse than the poeple simply being white. There are black people that act the same way that I have met who are fitting in just fine . Like the stephen carter types of blacks.

Private education is the great divider in this country and creates a huge 'im better than the next guy' mentality. The good old boys club as we call it came from a white culture, so (rich) whites can adapt to that culture more easily.

I want to go to business or law school but know I need to spend some time in banking or consulting to really get the best out of that. This is why I am trying to develop a network of mentors now to help keep me visible and deal with the BS.

Any type of front office role is mostly going to be about looking the part in the end. Can you guys point me toward some of these black firms? Might have to send that resume out

I agree that its a different struggle, and not being able to eat is worse than an existential crisis. But that doesnt make the crisis invalid. And in any case, if you are struggling, dont have kids.

Not trying to be insensitive, but you had a lot of years to plan this out: did you not think that entering the most upper crusted, old family, aristocratic and white male dominated privileged pool or Ivy leaguers might not be down town Detroit for you? Because if your smart enough for all that schooling, I'm going to imagine the your a bright enough guy to see that coming before you got there.

This is why I got into healthcare. I can't work for some racist ass white america corporation. I'm not going to work to maintain their bottom line or improve their revenue while they have contempt for me. I damn sure don't want to be doing business with a bunch of Sterling like cacs. At least in my field the money is good and I can actually help people, I feel better then working in corporate white america(or UK in your case) at least.

But hey, you're an accomplished brother and you should be proud. We all have to deal with shyt we don't like in our job, no matter what you do for a living.

This is why they say get involved with something that you love...no matter what you do in life, having a "job" will take some joy out of it..especially these cacs.

Just some advice, your only weapon in all of this is "doing" better...that's your only weapon breh. While them cacs are out there getting at them bed wenches, you better be out in them streets making deals, studying, grinding. We don't have the luxury of taking time off b. If you truly want to be successful in white America you have two options...either c00n or work 200 times as hard as everyone else. I don't c00n.

my ciccas always wonder why I have the pissed off face sometimes..I just reply with, "work". I literally be tired b, but I love what I do so it's a win.

Plus I love proving to people that I'm better then them..

I've been trying so hard to put this in words but it feels like being cheated on sounds accurate. It feels the way it would feel if you invest maybe in a chick for years, put her through college, etc and then when she gets there, she cheats ? after maxing out your credit cards and trashing your credit. lol. Only worse. I'd say I'm on the Tariq level now tbh
