This is why I got into healthcare. I can't work for some racist ass white america corporation. I'm not going to work to maintain their bottom line or improve their revenue while they have contempt for me. I damn sure don't want to be doing business with a bunch of Sterling like cacs. At least in my field the money is good and I can actually help people, I feel better then working in corporate white america(or UK in your case) at least.

But hey, you're an accomplished brother and you should be proud. We all have to deal with shyt we don't like in our job, no matter what you do for a living.
:to:

I fukked up. Should've done this or programming.

I haven't read the full post but i-banking is a grinder breh breh. You probably gettin paid a ridiculous amount of money tho.

But like my homie Vik da gawd said, "Just remember, making $200k a year working 80 hours a week is the same thing as making $100k working 40 hours a week."

@Theraflu: Enjoy the interesting work and the hard-earned money, try to change the system from within, and leave a financial legacy for the next generation (and even your grandkids?) so that your work here will not have been in vain.

One must pose the question, is it really fruitful/efficient to put in 200% in a corporate environment to get to that "next level" instead of directing that energy towards building something with other individuals in your community?

@Theraflu, do you feel like you have anything in the way of a support network at work in terms of knowing other black bankers, etc?

I was before I quit to go back to school. Why do yall all assume it's impossible? :heh: Once you build your expertise in an area that's needed and gain respect then it can happen for you as well.

I was mostly doing engineering project work so some weeks my schedule was less than 40 others it was more than 40. I averaged around 40 tho. Full disclosure... this was in Iowa, I'm sure I couldn't get away with that in an area where people actually want to live. :manny:

makes sense :ehh:

Another example where you can get that s working for the government. One of my dream jobs is to work for the Ontario Securities Commission (like the SEC). Had an interview for a summer position but didnt get it. Regardless, most people I know making 100K...they may have an alotted 40 hour week but the job requires a lot of overtime. Such is the case with my dad whos a project manager/civil engineer in construction/mining. This is Toronto though...In Fort Mac, Alberta and obscure oil places such dudes are eating very well right outta school.

The key phase here is ONCE YOU BUILD YOUR EXPERTISE. Ofcourse @Asantehene knows that once he becomes an M.D he won't have to work as many hours but it's safe to say while you are in your start it's pretty much beyond your control.

If you're an analyst or associate you can't really sit up and say 'well erm, i ain't working, everyone's working late on this deal, I'm going home'.

Everyone eats once they become the boss and build the expertise, however, this thread is about the phase BEFORE that, as you have to survive before that don't you ?

Brought this up in a previous post. Form some sort of coalition or association with other black bankers and build a network with non-racist clients. Or start a business consultant firm which assists (or invest) in distressed black/hispanic businesses.

This is a rant so pardon my incoherence

I'm sitting outside my office building on a break I have to write this because my life fukking sucks right now. I work at an investment bank, a very big one (JP,UBS etc)

I have a BSc, MSci and I'm CFA level two educated. I recently got hired as an associate in January. I was previously an analyst where I had little exposure and now I have my own work and serious contact with clients the reality of this is all hitting.

I left my old finance job to work in the family business for 18 months and honestly nothing will compare to working for yourself but I needed to get back to work. Working for family good but was only to help out.

Investment Banking is the worst job ive ever had. I've worked in call centres during college, retail, being a waiter but no job has made has been as ridiculous as IB.

1. It's not diverse. All the IB firms do all this affirmative action and equal opportunity big talk to make it SEEM like they're diverse but it's B.S check the directory of every main IB firm. There's like 4 black people per 100 whites.

They like EVERYONE but blacks. The tipping point was this week. I've been working with a black charity which helps place black kids in Wall Street bank internships. These kids are smart, have experience and we spend months prepping them interviews. Only one of them secured a role.

Mean while I have this new intern shadowing me today he is dumb as a brick and lacks basic common sense and he is somehow there.

I've been observing that in every division there's the same pattern (2 black men, 2 black women and that's it). I'm pretty certain they're only there to fill a quota. :beli: and legalities

You spend your days working with literally people like Don Sterling ALL my clients I'm working with on deals are ALL senile and old and you can tell the ones who don't wanna be doing business with a black dude

Last week I had to go Vienna for a day to meet a new client and you should have seen his face when I walked in :beli:

To top it all off I interviewed a black girl from another division who was great a few weeks ago and our M.D said she wouldn't be a good 'fit' meanwhile they hired some random blonde chick :dahell:

The only good thing about people a black investment banker is the money but how much is it really worth though. Yes, I earn a lot but at what cost ?!

Oh and I finally get why people like @Poitier and @marcuz hate bed wenches so much. Black women are literally not rated AT ALL as in AT ALL by our clients (CFO's CEOs etc) while all the white VPs get to travel our black female VP rarely gets to travel ever. They don't see her as a 'face' for the firm.

I just think people need to stop pretending n saying the 'black boys need to study and go college''we just need to work 10 times harder'

All that 'you gotta work twice as hard' shyt our parents told us was LIES. :wow:

It's nothing to do with your degree, your presentation these people are always gonna operate the one at a time rule

:wow:

I hate being an investment banker and Ill advise all black males to run away from this life path.

I
wanna go back to family business but pay isn't enough :to: I miss being my own boss :sadcam:

This life is a lie breh's I went through college did all the things people claim black men should do and I'm still no better off :banderas:

:wtf: nikka youre a banker?

Can I borrow 400 :lupe:

Well you still have a lot to be thankful for. Try to focus on the wonderful things you have instead of the things you don't. Many people in this thread have already said they would love to switch with you. Can you imagine working a dead end job dealing with lots of stress for crappy pay? It would be even worse lol.

I can relate a little bit. I'm starting residency so I'll be working 80 hrs on average for the next 3 yrs for isht pay. But I chose this life so I grin and bear it lol. I know things will improve.

Things will improve for you too! I know this for sure :-)

Get your cfp and go into wealth management at an RIA firm or start your own firm and focus on the niche you want in terms of clients
