I saw a YouTube short where Jay Cutler said he doesn’t even use barbell bench press anymore since it’s risky on your shoulders

He’s only doing dumbbell bench press now since you get better rom

I still do regular barbell bench but I’m stuck on 225 for 4-5 reps

Goal is to 10 reps but I probably need to bulk up
You should be doing both. Incline dumbbell, incline barbell, and flat bench barbell. All will help each other. 2 to three times a week and rotate each exercise

It's an ego driven bench mark for something that had little to no real life purpose in basic functionality imo, especially when you get up there in age. I benched pretty numbers when I was younger but looking back it hasn't done much pertaining to my physical longevity, ligament health or core strength. Push ups, pull ups, moderate weight resistance and mobility work is key once you get there in age but benching heavy just isn't that purposeful imo.

Honestly any dude who goes to the gym semi regularly can lift 225…that’s not even impressive.

If u got to make excuses on lifting 225 that’s wack just say u dnt go to gym. But most gym goers should be able to hit 225 unless they under 150lbs and just an all around tiny dude.

This is simply not true.

Most people are not lifting heavy or maxing out at the gym (at least at most commercial gyms where it usually a small group of regulars and novice working within their comfort zone).

I can do it, multiple sets and reps because I’ve practiced and built myself up over a significant amount of time (6-7 months).

Next thing you know, 315 will be “ohhhh that’s not that hard”

If u can’t max out 1 rep 225 and u a “regular” in gym then u ain’t trying hard enough in the gym.

No if and butts about it..now if u a newbie thats cool..but if u go regularly then nawl. I’m not buying it.

There’s plenty of dudes than can bench 225 but can’t make it up a flight of stairs or properly throw a punch

i’ve been able to get up to 225*10 using purely calisthenics (multiple set, 10 rep onearm push-ups) but have plateued.

i find solice being a year plus into muay thai bc the weight-lifting is a never ending battle with your own ego. i always feel weak for not hitting that 315 yet
