For me it came with time.

If you ever saw my plates at the beginning of the school year. #struggleplating

Nah they weren't that bad but just basic. It wasn't until I understood the art of plating (texture, colour, garnish, height etc) where I was able to be more creative.

Key is to balance these 4.

• colours: 2 or 3 are more interesting.
• shapes: try cutting things in different shapes.
• texture: for both palate and visual. Try using different cooking methods; for example if you're serving something soft try adding a crunchy element.
• flavour: think of different flavour profiles (i.e rosemary with lamb, or Asian cultures tend to include aromatics such as garlic, ginger, and spring onions).

General guidelines

• Plate food at least a half inch away from the rim; Don't overcrowd the plate
• There should be a focal point
• Don't be afraid to add height but don't go too crazy
