there are 100 percent legitimate concerns about having retired commissioned officers serve as SECDEF. however im not sure practically how much of a difference four years versus seven years in retirement makes in their civilian character. any retired commissioned officer is likely going to retain at least some of their mindset from time in the military. especially somebody with stars. i think those concerns will be present whether they are retired for four years, seven years, twenty years, whatever. IMO the seven year rule is more about preventing the appearance of a conflict of interest.
I get it, but at the same time...we're in "fix this shyt" mode so...

there really isn't :laff:

If that’s the case then no ex (senior or otherwise) official should have a gig. Military higher ups work like that. They retire there’s some private sector group waiting to offer them a gig. That’s just how it’s done. Unless they make it illegal the practice will continue

so we should take this guy out and put in a chickenhawk like john bolton?
im not against the pick at all. but its worth looking at it from a CMR perspective.

mainly i just dont get the seven years restriction. and it looks like its pretty easy to waive it anyway :skip:

Seems like some Dems will stop this appointment so Johnson/Flournay still have a shot.
Plus for generals who have retired within less than seven years, a waiver from congress is required. I don’t expect Congress to refuse to grant it but after they warily gave one to Mattis I would hope that this is the last one that will be given. This should not be happening. And frankly, it’s only happening because Biden needs a black face in his cabinet after handing out most jobs to white people, despite Clyburn’s concerns.

Breh was literally saved by black people in SC and still did this. Tells you what time it is...

There’s none. Hell, Hagel was SecDef and he served. They’re all usually still reeled in from time to time by civilian leadership as well as brass. Powell is still wooed for his opinion amongst leadership. Just have to be wise and not put a hawk in there like McChrystal or Honore (who would have been hilarious if he got selected).
