the 680 is pretty beasty. that 640 is a 'budget' card and not really for gaming. you would probably see great improvement with a gtx 660, let alone anything better than that (also the 680 is so beasty you may need a new psu as well)

Can you link a good psu for me? Anything else I need to run that card?

I can tell you that card recommends a 550w psu with at least 38 amps on the 12v. so you probably want a little more than that to be safe

there's a bunch of psu's in this thread that meet that requirement. honestly if you're getting into PC gaming, you need to learn to do some of this leg-work yourself

True, got a friend selling it to me for $300. I just didn't want to miss out on any sales for a psu and anything else I need . Definitely gonna do some research. Thanks for the help.

you've played "every game"? :comeon:

I mean obviously it should kick ass with all these games that were designed to run on a xbox/ps3. but I'm sure there's plenty of PC exclusives that probably wouldn't run so smooth. especially if you want to play with all the options 'maxed out'

most of the modern games that i like, yes i have played them perfectly fine. My system passes all the recommendations for just about every game out. Why you so mad that someone can build a nice gaming PC for $400 or so? Just because i dont have no GTX690 card doesnt mean im not satisfied with what i have. Swear some of you nikkas on here acting like u need everything perfectly set at 100 FPS in 1080P HD....:aicmon:

There's nothing like the satisfaction of your first rig booting up for the first time. Enjoy breh

Oh and I didn't read through the entire thread, but if no one has suggested, make sure you get some Arctic 5 Silver thermal paste for your CPU. Don't want your shyt to end up :flabbynsick: for no reason.

Back to me though. I found out my board supports Phenom II X6 processors. Was gonna grab one for 100 but I realized that this board is :deadrose: status for upgrades. Stuck on expensive ass DDR2 Ram and only have 4 sata ports. By the time I cop the CPU and some more RAM, I'd be better off with a new mobo/memory/cpu.

I'm probably bout to replicate Golden's build with this RAM

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL for $50

no mechanical HDD, no video card, no monitor and a different case. Can probably come out around $600

nah, that's not fair. you said there was "no reason" to spend more than $500. it's just like me saying there's "no reason" to build a PC when you can play most games on an xbox/ps3. obviously people spend the money cause they do want "everything perfectly set at 100 FPS in 1080P HD"

it's all good that you're happy with your build, but that doesn't mean you have to act like there's something wrong with people that want a little more. especially when you set the line at $500... and then your alternative is a $1000 gpu (gtx 690), like there's nothing in between

Had a cart fulla shyt and almost all of it went back to regular price. Did cop the Fractal Design Midi case though

$60 Newegg.com - Fractal Design Arc Midi Black High Performance PC Computer Case w/ USB 3.0 and 3 x Fractal High Performance 140mm fans

Guess my journey will be a little longer than Golden Gloves since the most of my shyt went back up.

I'm gonna do a short term build by building my server first with a Intel G540 socket 1155 chip then build my desktop when the i5 i7 comes down a little

It's cheaper these days to buy a desktop but the satisfaction from building your own rig can never be beat. I still got my desktop from 10 years ago that I built and it still works. It was on cheapo parts too, cheap case/power supply combo, ecs motherboard, kingston value ram, 80 gig hd, winxp, overclocked intel celeron, stock fan. Still runs good as hell, had to reformat like 10 times but still good

it depends if you're trying to game or not. one advantage those pre-builts have is they usually come with an OS

but as someone that has had issues with cheap PSU's and whatnot, I can't recommend that for gaming ("serious gaming". I don't want someone telling me how their $300 desktop runs some flash game fine)

Yeah if you want gaming, then building your own rig is the way to go, but if you just surfing the internet then buying a dell isnt such a bad deal.

I used to have my own gaming rig back when counter strike was the high end spectrum in terms of graphics, it's amazing how far technology has come. I remember overclocking my video card, geforce 3 series to perform like a 5 series lol.

I can make a $300 low end gaming pc that will run hitman absolution. With Windows 8 upgrade going for $15 or $40 makes it possible

how do you install an upgrade on a new system?

(obviously I know there's ways to get an OS for free, but I'm not talking about that)

(edit: and I can buy an xbox for less than $300 that will run Hitman, so I'm not sure what that proves)
