He considered a great black philosopher.

He wasnt pro black like garvey was he was more of a boule liberal democrat.

He started the naacp which was a important civil right organization for many years.

He wrote great books and was a pioneer in activism.

What was ur take on him

As a thinker/writer/theorist he deserves recognition. In a certain way his theories on the talented tenth have grown on me and I believe should be looked at seriously.

But as a man I feel he was a disgrace. His work against Garvey and ultimately the race as a whole strikes him from any serious consideration as a great Black man, in my opinion.

I support the protest mindset of Dubois' because he started the Crisis Magazine which gave black writers an independent resource to express their experiences and opposition to racial issues. In the beginning, Dubois wasn't one to back down on issues despite the personal consequences to himself. He was actually forced to resign from the NAACP because during the Great Depression he encouraged blacks to support other black businesses; the NAACP viewed this as "segregationist" which they were opposed to. I also respect the fact that he provided a platform for the celebration of black culture and identity through art and writing, which would eventually come into play during The Harlem Renaissance.

I'll probably do a multi part answer bc there's a few thoughts that I have. The first one -There are ideals that I support from Dubois in that he opposed Booker T. Washington's stance on accommodation and white acceptance. Meaning that Washington's idea (The Tuskegee Machine) was that if blacks work hard and elevate themselves they would be more "acceptable" to whites. That blacks should take advantage of learning how to produce their own, farm their own lands,etc... they could gain the respect of whites. Rather than have whites label us a degenerates, we could work to "prove our worth". Sort of like saying, ok.. leave us alone, let us do our thing so that we could progress and the whites will see us becoming more acceptable in their eyes. We can create economic gains for ourselves, but we won't fight against the whites for our rights. As long as we prove that we are "good negroes" then whites will leave us be, so to speak. But, that was disproved because when blacks did gain economic independence, the ability to be profitable, lived separate in our own towns, educated ourselves.. the whites still felt some type of way and destroyed the towns, communities through violence and other methods.

First off, any position I give is through the matrix of the position that we should be pushing to build our own as opposed to looking for cacs to "give" us.
With that said, In general I hold the same position as Booker T Washington

"Africans in America had not yet received anything free yet had toiled on it's soil, and so if Africans abroad had a chance at opportunity afforded by their African brethren in America, they should be more than welcome."
- Booker T Washington, 1915

Our ancestors already fought this fight.
Immigration Act of 1917 - Wikipedia

The U.S. already tried to exclude other "African Peoples" from the U.S. ...and by extension access to the spoils of what the "descendants of slaves" fought for. Those same "descendants of slaves" successfully fought back against those attempts by the government. Put another way, access to the spoils of our fight ...has been part of our fight.

Now the position can be made ...
  • "well, they were wrong":usure:
  • To which I say "....ok":ld:
  • Change the laws / culture then.:hubie:
But understand that the current configuration where African people throughout the world can come to the U.S. and have access to the same spoils as "descendants of slaves" is the deliberate product of our ancestors fighting for it to be that way. ...and people who value that "product" like myself and others will fight you on it :boss:

all 23 million miles of useful land
The NAACP’s founding members included white progressives Mary White Ovington, Henry Moskowitz, William English Walling and Oswald Garrison Villard, along with such African Americans as W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida Wells-Barnett, Archibald Grimke and Mary Church Terrell.

A white lawyer, Moorfield Storey, became the NAACP’s first president. Du Bois, the only black person on the initial leadership team, served as director of publications and research

James Weldon Johnson was the organization's first black president 1920-1930

Looks like he was down with colorism with the plethora of whites and light skinned blacks in the early workings of the NAACP

Both Booker T and Dubois were heroes and essential contributers to our continued struggle for liberation

The one lesson I learned, among many, from these great men and what my elders encouraged, is to not focus your attention/research solely on the actions of both men, but also on the actions/inaction of the people they served

Do you think the government would've been able to successfully undermine the Honorable Garvey without Black folks abandoning him

We gotta stop playing favorites with our liberation leaders/contributors/fighters
Then we proceed to undermine the other liberation fighters we don't like to prop up the fighters we do like

We did it in the past, we're doing it today. Such actions contributes to your plight, it doesn't solve it as history has proven. Holding someone accountable doesn't mean you have to permanently cripple them from positively contributing to the liberation of Black folks

Imagine if Black folks then held both men equally accountable instead of choosing sides. Would holding them equally accountable, have forced them to control their ego and forfeit the desire to be viewed as the Black community supreme leader, in order to jointly, separately and/or indirectly focus on the bigger goal

Any conversation on dubois that tries to relegate him to a 5-10 year period is kinda pointless:francis:
  • Talk about CIA and garvey all you want but Dubois was instrumental in the pan African congress movement that lead to "political" decolonization in Africa
  • While his "talented tenth" notion eventually gave way to his ideas on the “Guiding Hundredth”
Point being, his positions swinged wildly throughout his 95 years life. You don't pin Malcolm X to “Detroit Red” then act like nothing else happened after that.

SIDENOTE:
Stop with all the Dubois vs Washington nonsense. shyt is old bruh. Both approaches were needed.
One person focused on material economic needs while the other focused on ideological political needs.

To paraphrase John Henry Clarke
"People need to stop trying to referee a match that never happened"

This.....thank you for some intelligence in this thread.

People really sitting up here and defending fukking Booker T. Washington's compromise...

If any Black so called leader today...

Were to tell you..."Yall need to not fight against the White man, but acquiese and find your place in society amongst them..."

Yall would call that man a c00n...

But now...it's...."We need both..."

Nah fukk outta here....

Booker T. Washington was being funded by Southern Whites and Southern Whites basically wanted slavery with extra steps and Booker T. Washington was willing to give it to them...

And it wasn't for Dubois...we would be sitting around today in some Jim Crow shyt where we can't go no where and or do nothing without checking in with White folks...

So nah....

fukk that...

Politics is about playing favorites....

The Atlanta Compromise was castrophic for Black people and if any Black person today would say some shyt like that...yall would be killing him King fukking c00n.

this is such freezing cold take you should be ashamed of yourself. Booker was right we could locked down the trade industry if we would have taken his approach.
