It really only became like this in the past 10 years and that's been because of Marvel's movies. From the 60's to probably the late 90's they were pretty even when it came to comics. DC up until recently has pretty much had mainstream culture on lock since probably the 60's. They had the 60's live action Batman show and the 60's Filmation DC animated shorts, Superfriends in the 70's and the Wonder Woman tv show, the Reeves Superman movies in the late 70's and 80's, and the Batman movies in the 90's and the animated series and the short lived Flash series. You've had multiple generations of people who've never read a DC comic but know about DC characters because of their films and tv shows. Marvel had a lot of misses with their movies until Blade in 1998 but did have success on tv with Hulk in the 70s and X-Men and Spider-Man in the 90's but nowhere close to DC.
Marvel also in the past few years has really started to reach out more to non white comic book fanbase such as Black people and other non white people and the gay community. They've really been pushing Black Panther, Miles Morales, Sam Wilson Captain America, etc hard and it's working since you have a lot of black people showing them love. All the hip hop variant covers has also helped a lot. I remember 20 years ago Black Panther didn't get the kind of love he's getting now, Sam Wilson was considered just Cap's sidekick, etc. Marvel has had Muslims in prominent positions such as Dust in X-Men and the current Ms. Marvel. Gays are getting bigger representation in comics with Northstar becoming even more prominent in stories and having him get married, turning Iceman gay, one of those Young Avengers guys being gay, and the way they've kinda of kinda of shifted the X-Men franchise from a metaphor of the black struggle for civil and human rights to gay rights.
