For how well the defense is playing, simply look to the last 2 drafts under Garrett compared to the first 2 drafts under McCarthy. Notice the players in Red. 2 drafts a piece under both coaches. McCarthy has 9 players that are either starting or are part of a rotation with a lot of snaps per game. Garrett only has 3.

LB Leighton Vander Esch - basically a bust. doubt he returns
G Connor Williams - up and down, was benched earlier this year. isn't reliable
WR Michael Gallup - On offense. Probably won't come back
DE Dorance Armstrong - in the rotation. gets limited snaps
TE Dalton Schultz - When he has become the best pick in the draft something is wrong with your draft. And he will probably walk in free agency. And the only reason why he's playing is because Jarwin can't stay healthy.
