On this day in 1967, at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the first-ever world championship game of American football.

In that historic first game--played before a non-sell-out crowd of 61,946 people--Green Bay scored three touchdowns in the second half to defeat Kansas City 35-10. Led by MVP quarterback Bart Starr, the Packers benefited from Max McGee's stellar receiving and a key interception by safety Willie Wood. For their win, each member of the Packers collected $15,000: the largest single-game share in the history of team sports.

Seattle averaged 10.5 yards per play (15 for 158) against "Quad" and 4.7 (51 for 240) against the Packers' 3-4, 4-4, 4-2 and 4-1 defenses.

Regrets?

"No," Capers replied. "You never know how it'll work, and you adapt based on your personnel.
"We had to make a bold move after the bye week. Some of them work well and some of them don't."
"Quad," however, wasn't finished.

The next week against the Jets, the Packers used it 26 times. "Quad" was the base call seven times in the Jets' twin five-play touchdown drives to open the game, and on the first three plays (for 20 yards) of the next scoring drive before Capers summoned the 3-4.

With Detroit spreading the field in Week 3, "Quad" got the nod just twice because the Packers played almost all nickel.
The next Sunday in Chicago, there were nine snaps of 4-3. On the eighth, Tramon Williams deflected a pass back toward Matthews for an interception.

On what would be the last ignominious gasp for "Quad," Peppers was in the midst of moving from right to left end when Matt Forte carried for a first down.
Opponents rushed 29 times for 128 yards (4.41) against "Quad" compared to 420 times for 1,791 (4.26) against other defenses.
They had 23 pass attempts/sacks for 215 net yards (9.35) against "Quad" compared to 582 for 3,408 (5.86) against other defenses.
In all, "Quad" allowed 343 yards in 52 snaps (6.60) whereas the other defenses allowed 5,199 in 1,002 (5.19).
Based on anecdotal and statistical information, the defense known as "Quad" should be banned forever in Green Bay.

I was listening to the pressers

McCarthy is excited to go back to Seattle. Almost like he knows how to beat them. :ohhh: In his press conference after the game he was asked how he felt about going back to Seattle? Instead of paying homage to how great they are, he says he's looking forward to going back there and is looking forward to winning the conference championship

http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/16/us/seattle-nfl-cheese-ban/index.html

On Sunday the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers will face off in the NFC Championship Game. For the Seahawks, winning would give them the chance to go back to the Super Bowl and perhaps net another Vince Lombardi Trophy.

High stakes to be sure, but officials in one Seattle suburb have taken pre-game rivalry to the next level by banning "possession of and/or consumption of cheese or cheese flavored products."

For those not making the connection between cheese and this NFL matchup, Douglas Schulze, the city manager of Bainbridge Island, Washington, spells it out in his executive order.

"On Sunday, January 18, 2015, the Seattle Seahawks opponent in the NFC Championship game will be the Green Bay Packers, aka Cheeseheads," the order states. "Fans of the Green Bay Packers are frequently seen wearing obnoxious wedge-shaped foam hats painted yellow." It is "due to this relationship" between Packers fans and cheese that the ban was enacted.

The ban only applies to employees at city hall and only on Friday, but Schulze has a plan for anyone who defies the ban and comes, pun intended, packing.

"I'm going to arrive early, and we'll have some type of cheese grater or shredder available so if anybody brings in cheeses or cheese products, we'll have to dispose of them," Schulze told CNN affiliate KOMO.

The ban may only impact a fraction of the town's 23,000 residents, but it caught the attention of Green Bay fans almost 2,000 miles away.

"Insane," "ridiculous" and "demonic" :russ: were just a few of the adjectives thrown out by distraught Cheeseheads to CNN affiliate WDJT.

"They should never ban cheese," said one man "We are going to own Seattle."

Some proposed bans of their own, such as a boycott of Seattle-based Starbucks.

But one Milwaukee radio station did one better. 94.5 the Lake will "Say No To Seattle." That means no songs from Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Heart before the big game.

The preparations aren't all about bans either. In the Bainbridge Island executive order, Schulze also calls for a "Blue Friday" celebration for all local government employees, who are encouraged to wear "Seahawks jerseys, logo gear, team colors."

But lest anyone get carried away, Schulze made it clear, in an interview with KOMO, to leave the Cheetos and Cheez-whiz at home. And don't even think about sneaking in some on a party tray. But cheese lovers needing a fix may have one remaining option: Schulze said "he has yet to scour the vending machines."

We got this

Last year, Seattle put the quarterback under duress on a league-high 34.4 percent of pass plays. This year, it was 24.9 percent, barely above the NFL average of 24.4 percent.

PLAYOFF TRENDS: Both spreads this weekend are relatively large. I was able to unearth some more interesting numbers.

For instance, did you know that favorites of seven or more are just 3-9 against the spread on Championship Sunday since 1997? This kind of makes sense, as a team that makes it this far shouldn't be getting that many points.

Here's another, which I mentioned a couple of weeks ago: Non-divisional, same-site teams struggle to beat the same opponent twice, going 14-28 ATS since 2000. This also applies to the Seahawks.

Seahawks 2014 defense worse than 2013 and 2012 incarnations in PPG, SOS, also worse than last season in SRS:

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/sea/2014.htm 254 points allowed, 0.1 strength of schedule, 7.8 DSRS
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/sea/2013.htm 231 points allowed, 1.4 strength of schedule, 8.9 DSRS
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/sea/2012.htm 245 points allowed, 1.8 strength of schedule, 7.7 DSRS

Seahawks interior is beaten up, missing Mebane,Cassius Marsh, Hill, etc. Should be able to run on them straight up the middle behind Sitton-Linsley-Lang. Ran all over Detroit who had the #1 run defense by far. Lots of media nuthugging Seahawks for beating up on backup QB led teams (STL, ARZ), and guys who suck (Kaep), and teams with losing records (Carolina). That's like bigging up GB defense for holding TB to 100 yards.
