This is an old lazy take.

Enthusiast press content like interviews with directors and execs is journalism, leaking work conditions/abuses to reporters and keeping sources is journalism, writing in depth descriptions of corporate culture and dev cycles is journalism. RockPaperShotgun, Polygon, GamesIndustry.biz, Digital Foundry and many others take ethics into account when they write a story or produce a video, no different from Hollywood Reporter or Film Comment. If you only pay attention to IGN or youtubers that's on you.
There some journalism but it’s few and far between and most times it’s VERY agenda driven.

Most of what gets “reported” is basically marketing or unfounded rumors and speculation.

In no other industry could a youtuber say he “heard something” with zero sources and also admitting he’s not even sure what he means, and it spawn an industry wide controversy with people reporting on it as fact and fans running far and wide to spread the story.

Games industry reporting and discourse is absolutely wild :wow:

I agree, but even some of those sites you listed are guilty of running with someone else's story

then you get posts like this:

How much of issues they experienced were general game issues vs inefficiency and mismanagement? How much of the pain felt from the development process was from normal problems or incompetence?

three articles with the same source (Bloomberg)

you don't really see this in non-gaming journalism. different publications might run with the same story, but they got their own people on it

Spencer sent the goons

If only one of these cacs had the balls to expose how shyt a job Spencer has done with the resources available while also running down most of his existing studios to the point of turning one of the biggest games in the world into a non favor joke.

What was the point of this video?

He doubled down on the original statement.

He stated that he doesn't specifically know what the game's "success" metrics are, but then he reiterated several times in the video that it fell short of making the money it was supposed to make while hinting that he knew that as fact.

Jeff was most likely pressured into making this video by his "sources" or his workplace or something. The video only states that he is sorry that it may have caused some confusion between a Japanese dev and US based Microsoft caused by US based media.

I agree with the comments in this thread that games (late edit: and popular tech) journalism is ass. Technically, what they are doing is journalism, but it's mostly surface level stuff. (Late edit: It's closer to reporting...I would classify most of them as reporters within the game industry.)

Among other things, the relationships and access most games journalists have to protect can get in the way of real reporting.

(Late edit: There are so many articles that can be written about the industry or specific games or series etc. For example, what John at Digital Foundry does with retro games is an example of real gaming journalism as opposed to reporting.)

:wow: Gaming journalism and wrestling journalism go hand to hand, as far as spewing bullshyt, fanbase eats it up, and ends up being bullshyt at the end of the meal:beli:
I find that all these "journalists" are just bloggers who have close relationships with the big companies.

They say just enough to keep their access to company's content. But use clickbait to get views.

I'll say it again and again, I'm tired of middle aged white men being the voice of gaming, anime and comics.

yep, he doubled down in the "it cost this much, but only made this much", which kind of misses the point of Gamepass

some of these dudes are like sports commentators. they just keep running their mouth regardless if they actually have something worth talking about

Because everyone including major gaming sites is doing exactly what the Sony Stan's did here on the coli.

"Hi-Fi rush flopped, hi Fi rush is a failure, gamepass kills sales, Microsoft isn't happy with the performance of hi Fi rush"

When that's not what he said (but might as well have) because there is a narrative that people create behind Xbox and it can be used as ammo in their "war"... As a "professional" this is where I expect him to understand what he should and shouldn't say to the public unless he really doesn't care about blow back.

a lot of it is just sensationalism for the sake of clicks

I hate how shyt that started as 'allegedly', rumor, etc, gets stated as matter of fact

the other day something came across my google feed saying something like, "Air Jordan 1 ' Lost and Found' restocked. details inside". click on the shyt and it says "they restocked and sold out quick, but you can still get a pair from resellers..." :stopitslime:

like that was the info anyone clicking on that link was looking for

its hilarious how xbox stans now pretend to “hate insiders” and “games journalism” when up until this point they were championing people like Grubb, Tom Warren, Jez Corden, Colt Eastwood, etc. because they would constantly “leak” games and tell them shyt they wanted to hear.

Project scarlet, project midnight, project liquid, project this, half those games xbox stans brag about were things leaked or talked about by the above people. Xbox studios themselves were giving them controlled leaks which is why anyone cares about any of the above names, xbox stans put them on a pedestal for constantly jerking gamepass, phil spencer, or giving them false hope about big games. They were loving them when it was non-stop fud about the PS5 those first two years.

Now that any of them are critical about how badly the management is or marketing is over there they are quick to turn on them. Now it’s fake news, they want xbox to fail, they are clout chasers, etc. the same shyt “sony stans” have been calling them for the past 3 years lmao

You are the only one here to post their content.

As usual it’s you talking out of both sides of your ass.

Post all their content, claim they are full of shyt if it doesn’t fit your narrative, claim they are 100% accurate when it does fit your agenda.

Then claim everyone else is fans of them:stopitslime:
