@Ms. Elaine you going toe to toe over the movie. How come you aren't in the film room more often?
I actually don't watch a lot of tv or film. :dame:

I only saw this movie because I had the opportunity to see it for $2.....and that's all that it was worth in my opinion.

In retrospect, it wasn't a bad film; but at the same time (based on the quality), it wasn't something that belonged on the big screen, much less something that deserves awards.

As someone who has a degree in math, I guess I was just a bit disappointed that a film called Hidden Figures had so little "figures" in it and the math showcased for the most part was pretty rudimentary.

Also, I understand they want to create a well rounded story but that whole romance subplot between Katherine and that military guy could have been cut and that time should have been given to developing the storylines of the other two women, who were by far the more interesting characters.

First let me say :damn: I've never been good at math. To see a black woman with a degree sis
Taraji-P-Henson-467.gif

Cause it shows he way you ripped the movie on the math element alone. :heh: Insulting it on the elementary algebra aspect (was that what you called it?). Damn rear saying it was damn near remedial math.

But let's not forget, the movie still has to play it up for Hollywood audiences. They have to focus on a romantic interest & only one of ladies are going to be he focus point. All three? Ha. Not in a black movie. White Hollywood still needs their balls rubbed Example: Kevin Costner taking the colored sign down. Hollywood prolly jizzed in their pants over it.
I still haven't seen it so can't can't say if it were better on tv or not. As far as you putting it on Lifetime status kinda scares me cause any movie they have with black peoples are always terrible (I've seen them all cause there aren't that many). When I get to it if I feel it's not a theater release movie I hope it's a HBO original movie quality.

Either way, your critique really stood out. Thanks and don't shy away from the Film Room we talk about a lot beyond current tv shows & movies. Often we discuss older shows & movies.

Girl, it ain't even that. :dame:

Like I said, I like the subject matter but execution was . Definitely not something I would recommend spending $15 on.

And I won't give anything away but many of the scenes were very repetitive.

Watched it the day it came out. Very great film. Janelle did her thing. I wonder why she wasn't nominated for a golden globe and Oscar. She was great.

The AKAs were deep in the theatre too
AKA whats that a greek organization?

If that's the case then that's really tragic because the movie had very little substance.

I don't know why people are always so afraid to give their honest opinions on black projects.
and you still ain't explain why the execution was sub par

Would you still have the same opinions about the movie had you seen it for $15? :mjpls:
Yes. I saw the movie twice actually because they kicked everyone out the theater the first timeI went. I kept my ticket and they let me see it again for free.

Katherine/Taraji P Henson's character running back and forth to the bathroom was executed very well. This also wasn't one of those movies where a white person was caping for no segregation and black equality throughout the film.

So what was wrong with the execution? Still ain't explain it after all these messages.

What is there to explain?

The math wasn't great and glossed over, NASA scenes were repetitive and the personal lives scenes added nothing to the story. The only outside NASA scene I liked was the library one.

Also the cinematography was terrible.

Again it's all about expectations. If this shyt was airing on Disney or Lifetime, I'd give it a pass. But people want this shyt to be nominated for BP Oscar. :gucci:

Hampton va
Soul Space Shuttle. I think it's cool that it's a story based in Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area. Never any movies based on that area.

Plus, historically this is where the first African slaves were brought here to Jamestown in 1619.

Good job Pharrell.
My dad actually knew mary jackson she helped him and my aunt get an internship at nasa because she wanted specifically black kids to intern there
She also went to my great aunts church

lifetime? :comeon: Then how would you have like to seen it executed? There was a good amount of focus on the math. They showed us Katherine doing quadratics at the age of 7 in her 8th grade class. All the black women in that particular room were called "computers" because of how fast they could compute mathematical problems by hand. How is that not focusing on the math? How many times did Katherine talk about she works on the trajectory and landing for NASA? They also mentioned how using an old technique that's no longer used was the solution to calculating how to put a rocket in space and get it to land safely.

Octavia Spencer's character figured out how to code the IBM machine as it was able to compute math problems at a much higher speed than any human. So they learned how to code and use the machine. Hence another math element in the film. But you say that they glossed over the math... :jbhmm:

How is this glossed over? :mjlol: And the the personal scenes added humanness to the characters. The movie is about the three women and all the challenges they faced, not just them working at NASA. If it only focused on math, then it would have been a movie for math scholars, not movies for a black family to enjoy.

The library scene showcased racism and segregation, which many other scenes also did. So what about the library scene stood out from the rest?

You are just nitpicking at things that aren't there. The cinematography? The opening scene was amazing with them following the police officer. It was a beautiful and vibrant scene, and the soundtrack for the film was also great.

do you think if the math was better/ more realistic you would have enjoyed it more?
do you think that with more realistic math the movie would have appealed to the broader public?

serious question "pickin your head as a math major black woman"

she's just nitpicking. There was a lot of math in the movie for people who don't do any sort of math whatsoever.

I noticed the quadratics and calculus because I took them in college not too recently.

Plus they introduced the ibm machine, coding and how it can perform math equations at high speeds.

I explained this in my last post in this thread.
