It's a sequel nobody's asked for.

Russell Crowe and Phoenix were so damn good and nobody's here even comparable in this sequel. Soon as I saw them terrible CGI monkeys, I knew this was a scam.

Main character being bland is not even the biggest issue when entire cast was so so. Denzel looking like Alonzo from Training Day time travelling to Ancient Rome times. He even says "myyyyy nikka gladiator" line, are you fukking serious? :russ:

The beginning of the movie looked fine, it gave the audience some emotional interest. And then the rest of the movie becomes bland. With some glimpses of pretty cool scenes and some glimpses of pretty good acting that pretty much gets cancelled by the next bland acting scene.

Even the fighting scenes were bad. Ridley Scott needs to retire. He hasn't made a great film since The Martian. That's pretty much 10 fukking years.

Saw it last week. It was a fun time at the movies carried mostly by Denzel’s charisma and timing. The film’s fatal flaw is its literally the story of the first film told from the perspective of a weaker protagonist. Paul Mescal does his best with a thin character but both Denzel and Connie Neilson upstage him in every scene.

The movie should have been about Denzel taking over Rome. His character was based on a real life person who ended up rising up and becoming Emperor, that would have been cool and different. We didn’t need a retread of the first film.

Nıgga even the beginning of the movie was terrible. We didn't know who this nıgga was when the first war started and his girl was some random.

The visuals of the afterlife was dope but inconsistent and irrelevant. Maybe they should've stuck with that and went in that direction with a darker ending.

This was ultimately a cash grab and I'm glad Denzel gotta bag.....but damn. They even insinuated he was bisexual. This has no rewatchable quality. May have to drop it to a 5.2/10. It was that bad. I wish they would've deviated to using actors that could moreso portray English accents and gave the twins a backstory also if they changed Kid Luscious, they should've changed adult Luscious and perhaps used Joseph Quinn for that role.

Overall, everything was all bad and the movie was better off being scrapped.

Yea beginning of the movie was bad too. Just felt like at least it gave some little potential regardless of some dumb writing mistakes. But soon after that it just became boring.

And when they brought CGI monkeys and sharks, that became like a big budget parody film.

Like others mentioned, should have been a separate film about Denzel's character, with no Gladiator name on it, and not him but someone else in that role.

It's a creatively bankrupt cash grab.

I feel like the beginning of the movie was the worst part. They expected the audience to know it was the same kid from the first movie from the jump. The movie doesn’t reveal it till the mom sees him for the first time.

The original did an outstanding stuff getting us invested in Maximus. Here it is just awful. We don’t realize who the kid is unless you were aware about it before watching the film.

The rest of the film was bland, copy + paste of the original and the character writing is so much worse. Denzel & how it tackles the themes of the people of Rome and the influence they can have was all I liked.

If it wasn’t for Denzel’s character was the only bright spot. Pedro’s character had unused potential to draw parallels to Maximus but that gets so rushed so he barely made any impact.

The best thing about this movie is that it got me to watch the OG which is a classic.

just saw it and i kind of agree with everyone — this was mid. especially compared to the first. the first had a tight narrative. it was grounded. this one was a mess, everything felt like it was moving too fast for its own good.

lucius’ motivations were hollow— i just couldn’t feel his love for his wife and his friends like i felt for maximus and his family. i think he did a good job with the fighting scenes and with the dialogue between him and the medic guy. but tbh i don’t think anyone could’ve saved this character, so i don’t put the blame on paul mescal.

i liked denzel’s character but understand why people thought he hammed it up. he kinda did. it was entertaining though. i think bringing back lucius’ mom was a great choice. for his short amount of screen time pedro pascal did a good job. the twin emperors were terrible… i get that they were dumb and it shows how far rome had fallen but i could’ve gone for a few more scenes with interactions between just them or some of the other royal people. they weren’t fleshed out enough. hard to fill joaquin phoenix’s shoes in that case but they were a flop for me.

the cgi was shyt coming out of a butt. those monkey dog things in the first fight looked terrible. i really enjoyed the coliseum scenes they were brutal. my favorite bit of the score was the afterlife scenes. the ending had me like:

:yeshrug::francis:

i wasn’t impressed. but it was an ok movie. i feel the same way i felt watching alien romulus earlier this year: disappointed. a hollow semi-sequel that relies on nostalgia of the original’s greatness.
