- Denzel seemed to be on autopilot. Halfway through the movie, he basically transformed into Alonzo from Training Day. I also think he was miscast portraying a Berber.
- I would still fukk the shyt out of Connie Nielsen
- The twin emperors were too cartoonish and goofy
- The plot mirrored the Gladiator plot too closely
The first fight scene in the area with the CGI really threw me off. The two emperors were ok and they played their part. I wonder if Caligula was an inspiration for the youngest one. Overall, I would give it a 7/10. It did leave off the first which was good. The male feminism and CGI just took me for a loop. Pedro Pascal's character should have had more screen time.
In hindsight it was actually better than I gave it credit for. Yes they were relying on Denzel Washington to carry the movie but that's what he does. Him playing a 27 BC Alonzo Harris was nice.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but this will always be Hollywood's problem: creating sequels and prequels and remakes no one asked for. I'll watch cause Pedro and Denzel in it.
I didn't like it. shyt felt like Be Cool Version to Get Shorty or Force Awakens to Star Wars: A New Hope. A lot of the movie is used to try and replicate the magic from the original, and it cant do it. Its not even that its bad its just sort of boring and meandering as it tries to connect the dots between this film and the much better original film.
If the original made Rome seem majestic and brutal, this movie made Rome seem mundane and aimless. Similarly if you thought the original film was brutal and majestic, you’ll think this movie mundane and aimless.
I rate it 4/10, its not a outright bad movie but catch this shyt on cable if its playing, don't go out of your way to watch this. The entertainment highlights was the gladiatorial fights, but honestly the most enjoyment I had the entire time was watching the Mickey 17 trailer before the movie started. That looks like it might be a original movie worth watching.
Heavy spoilers ahead….
Denzel’s motivation throughout the film changes so often it was to the point I wasn't sure what he wanted to do. Also his plot armor grows to the point it is cartoonish, but plot armor is a issue this whole movie.
They tied the majority of characters to the original Gladiator for no reason, but to drum up a purpose for the main character.
The indian doctor is a plot device specifically to set up the ending.
The main character goes from being Eminem with his moms and hating Rome, to a loyal Roman citizen out to revenge his mom in like 15 minutes of film time. I honestly can’t tell how long the entire time was.
The main character also has the most plot armor I have seen in recent movies, to the point Denzel who also has a shyt ton of plot armor himself asks out loud why does the main character have so much plot armor and is still alive. Denzel then proceeds to literally fail to cut through the main character’s plot armor. I shyt you not he stabs at the physical manifestation of plot armor repeatedly and can't even dent it. I don't know how anyone involved in writing the script let that scene get made and didn't say that scene was stupid.
Don't get me started on how the entire final act of the movie is based on Denzel manipulating a special needs guy to get what he wants. However right before that Denzel is the most likable character in the entire film. Its like the movie didn't want anybody to be really bad like the original emperor, so every bad character, including the emperors have their moments where the audience is suppose to feel sympathy for them or at least find them somewhat likable.
There are the equivalent of NPCs in the cast whose faces they show repeatedly but they never say a word, they are just the crew of people with the main character…. They also have plot armor, but there main purpose is to nod their heads at what the main character says or laugh at his jokes.
The ending makes no fukking sense at all….. NONE AT ALL. Maybe they want to do a Gladiator 3 if they are able to get one over on enough people this time to justify it. That is the only scenario where the ending makes sense. When it ends I literally said “what the fukk was that?” and some random chick next to me started laughing cause she didn't know either.
This shyt was a letdown. Main actor is pretty generic and lifeless. The plot is dumb af for the most part. The cgi is atrocious. Denzel gets a lot of screen time but his arc is pretty lame. I liked some of the action as ridiculous as it was however aside from the baboon battle which was retarded.
Years ago this would've been a direct to DVD sequel. Ridley was mad lazy with this especially script wise. 5/10.
When denzel died at the end before he went under the water I wanted him say , my nigha lmao
