They referenced the first movie so much it’s impossible not to compare the two. It’s not as great as the original but it’s a solid action movie. Seems like they dialed the violence down a notch too idk why. I went to one of those 4DX theaters for the first time to watch it. It’s cool but it’s distracting.

It was implied in the first one. That's why they harped on the age and their past relationship

It still was pointless within the context of the movie though. It made zero difference since his lineage was more important from his grandfather
I never read it as that tbh. I’ll rewatch it again but I really think it was a liberty.

I've watched it a few times with the commentary, as well. That was their intention to leave it open ended. Basically, Lucilla broke Maximus' heart and called it off abruptly, (due to whatever reasons), and he never saw or spoke to her again. One of the factors could've been that she was knocked up by Maximus, who her father did not approve of at that time, and went ahead with the arranged marriage to her "uncle." I forget exactly how they phrased it, but it was along the lines "is it possible that the child is Maximus'"?

There is probably a Directors Cut. Kingdom of Heaven was the same, the theatrical cut of that was terrible compared to the Director’s Cut
