It's impossible to watch this and avoid the fact the Mescal isn't as good a hero as Crowe and Denzel isn't as good a villain as Phoenix

I've watched it a few times with the commentary, as well. That was their intention to leave it open ended. Basically, Lucilla broke Maximus' heart and called it off abruptly, (due to whatever reasons), and he never saw or spoke to her again. One of the factors could've been that she was knocked up by Maximus, who her father did not approve of at that time, and went ahead with the arranged marriage to her "uncle."
