It’s like people can’t figure out how close 1998 and 2004 are.

Kidd locked up Bron badly for a finals game (and bron is two positions above him). Bruce Bowen had Bron locked up for a finals. But we’re done with the 90’s? Lol.

I posted Jordan’s comp in a reply and people just rather duck it with nonsense.

Trying to penalize him for winning in an era of great bigs.

Prime MJ would still be the best athlete in the game TODAY too
Ehhh

These 7'3+ dudes moving like Wemby and KP (when he's healthy) are as unique an athlete in this sport's history and basically any sport. Historically, how many bigs do you have like that? Bol Bol (who wasn't half as refined as the aforementioned names)? Wilt? It's not more than 10. They've basically maximized the human body, pause

Plenty of wings with freak ability and/or freak measurements

I do wonder how the sport's coverage looks like once the Bron generation is gone. The NBA was more or less saved by Bird and Magic and raised to a different level with MJ. And Kobe, Shaq, Bron all these other stars have carried the torch, but the most prevailing narrative of LeBron's career is how he stacked up with MJ

I say all this to say that this sport has pretty much relied on some guys who played in the 80s for clicks for 40+ years. And once the last direct successors of that era are gone, wtf are they gonna do? Compare the guys from the 2020s to the dudes of the 90s and 2000s?

yes the early 2000s the competition fell off also. warriors just had a great team then with kd the best team ever

Tim Duncan and the Spurs won in 1999 and 2003 in route to winning a total of 5 championship. There was legit competition during the Shaq and Kobe years.

The question is already being answered with how they cover Ant and Wemby. You don’t have to be a MJ fan but it’s clear as day that whatever he did during his time is what the NBA media desperately wants back.

MJ is still my GOAT by a hair, but his biggest competition at his position in his era was a man who couldn't dribble without looking at the ball

I think with Wemby, it's just a thing where he's being billed as the GOAT ever, and Jordan is one of the candidates for that, obviously. I haven't seen him get the Lebron or Kobe stuff where dudes are specifically holding him as the bar.

Idk how serious the MJ comparison is with Ant. Most of the times I see it, it's just like lighthearted. I do think it would've got ramped up if he got a ring this early, especially with how many clutch moments he had early in the playoffs

If you watch basketball then you would know that team defense is geared towards stopping the star player and not just his positional comp

The point is that MJ is the standard for which all potential goat candidates in the NBA are measured. Just look how all the other greats reacted when he showed up at the 75th celebration.

Someone will pass him up eventually and we will all know when it happens without it being forced.

humans don’t get significantly more athletic in 20-30 years

Im willing to bet the average nba vertical in 2024 is the same as it was in 94.
WHat about skills

Wanna check the 3 point percent for the different eras?

This is the dumbest post in here. Scoring titles or championships, they weren’t washed. See post below. You got no idea what you’re talking about.

Resulting to insults at not logic. Gotcha. I debunked that post already

The problem with this mindset is that dribbling a basketball severely limits what you can do in terms of speed and athleticism:mjlol:

So who gives a damn about an athleticism gap, when a basketball in your hands is essentially a sort of handcuffs? Being fast doesnt help you in basketball unless you can dribble just as fast which is a skill. Athleticism and agility doesnt help you unless you can move with the ball, while executing your move set.

Skills remove the handicap you will have compared to practically any defender. Even one who has limited speed and agility has the advantage because they dont have the basketball. And even they are limited because they are backpeddling. Speed and athleticism evolution is definitely overated. Especially considering its mostly nikkas jacking up threes these days. Its not like they driving to the rim and using their agility to score buckets.

Having a high IQ defensively, and team defense has to account for something. I think players back then were superior in that regard.

Did you see me address athleticism gap anywhere? No. You just invalidated your whole post by debating something I didn't even mention
