If science keeps advancing in the manner(s) that it currently is, and certain technological ideas are pushed, humanity as we know it could quite possibly cease to exist. Transhumanism and/or some form of "living in the pod" or "brain in the vat" is not some far fetched science fiction - nor a mere thought experiment in 2024.

Not that bold. Liberal Secularism has a distinct link to the Enlightenment tradition and values, which has its roots in the early "natural philosophy" of the Greeks that predated it. If you read the works of Voltaire he advocated for separation of church and state , freedom of thought and expression of ideas. All these things contribute to scientific progress.



If you want a criterion look no further than child mortality rates, rates of poverty, and lifespans. Liberal secular societies tend to do better on these metrics. I mean most would agree that less impoverished healthier people living longer lives contributes to an overall better functioning society. Idk though maybe the criterion for you is a society of close and large kinship networks that deal witha great deal of want, disease and early death. It's more of what you consider "well functioning" and that's a question of values.
