I hate you.....BREH I HATE YOU
Why would you ruin my perfect image of her
I hate you
which ones? The ending actually reminded me a bit of some of the better episodes of Master Of None
Also a parallel to the beginning/end of the Juneteenth episodeEpisode started out with Earn driving the car.
Episode ends with Van driving the car.
A parallel of who was in control of the relationship during the episode.
I know you see that caption (free the blood)..I can assure you that hairy arms should be the least of your worriesI hate you.....BREH I HATE YOU
Why would you ruin my perfect image of her
I hate you
One thing that this episode highlights is the HUGE racial discrimination that black people suffer and are made to live with as just “normal” occurrences.
Earn’s white friend from the Pilot isn’t even a “friend”. Just another white guy who gets off on saying the word ****** and thinks it’s ok because he’s dating a woman of color. He’s not even dating a black woman whose particularly proud of BEING black, so not only is he dating the “whitest” Black woman he can find, he’s totally clueless to why him using a certain racial epithet is a problem.
The white people in the window staring at Earn and Van as though they’d NEVER seen a black person a day in their lives, in TWO THOUSAND AND fukkING EIGHTEEN. DURING what is presumed to be a popular annual tourist event. Black People are something foreign, to be gawked at, ogled, treated as zoo animals.
Van’s casual brushing off of the deep seated and institutionalized racism of her OWN partial heritage. She casually tells Earn that this particular celebration includes blackface, and that she herself was bothered by it until she was FORCED to conform and her coping mechanism was on some “I’m Serena Williams, I’m better than all you heathens” shyt.
Van’s biracial friend (or sister?) being brought up in a world that indoctrinated her with the attitude that she had to “choose” white in order to feel that she has chosen better. In her world, choosing a black man means that she has chosen a man who will support neither her nor her future children.
The German guy that Van was casually flirting with. He felt that the fact that he could speak German with Van meant that he could disrespect Earn (by omission) and flirt with Van RIGHT in front of him. And then when Earn called him out he had the AUDACITY to act offended, a world of white Privilege and an indoctrinated sense of supremacy made him feel that Earn was essentially unimportant right in front of the woman he was obviously there with.

had to watch this again with my girl last night. i'm doubling down, earn was not the one in the wrong here. outside of not knowing what type of really shytty weekend vanessa had in mind for him, yall acting like earn flipped out because she dragged him to a beyonce concert.
she dragged him to some shyt where she was flirting in german with some other dudes and someone literally walked up to him and touched his face thinking it was blackface. if van really loved him she'd understand completely why he felt uncomfortable as fukk there.
So who all robbed or got robbed in this episode?
Yeah, I feel like the first conversation at the bar was innocent. Are we sure they were flirting? I thought that scene (by the lack of subtitles) was to highlight Erns insecurity. The next time they spoke and we got subtitles, the dude was giving her decent relationship advice.
van's childhood friendship got robbed because she "chose black" too.Van got robbed of the illusion of her and Earn riding off into the sunset as a happy couple
Earn got robbed of his time, dignity, and now his kinda-sorta relationship with Van
Van also literally got her phone robbed
Van: A round of beers please, for the group over there.
Baarkeeper: You speak German?
Van: Yeah, but just me.
Barkeeper: He doesn't?
Van: No, he doesn't
Barkeeper: Ok, it's our secret language then.
They both laugh and Earn pretends to laugh with them.
Van to Earn: Did you understand that?
Earn: No.
Barkeeper: So he really doesn't speak a word of German?
Van: No, he doesn't understand it either.
Barkeeper: Why is he wearing that dumb mask?
Earn: "Mask" maybe?
(This next part seems like it had some dialogue cut out because it doesn't make much sense on its own.)
Van: Mhh well...
Barkeeper to Van: Right! Except you.
Van: Yeah, I bought this recently (referring to her dirndl). And you? Are those real lederhosen?
Barkeeper: Those are real lederhosen, yes. Real bavarian.
Earn: Ding ding, I'd love some service.
thats a grown muthafukkin man!van's childhood friendship got robbed because she "chose black" too.
but earn the problem for not wanting to be around her friend and those people
