has nothing to do with what was cool in hip hop in the 90's, the rise of designer and prescription drug use is generational and big across all demographics. just like whites and blacks were using H and coke in the 70's across socioeconomic lines, today's drug use spans genres and color lines. stop blaming hip hop/music when the music is a reflection of the what's popular amongst this generation.
Eh

All of the rappers i bumped were anti drug n i partyd like a mofo

But i do agree that now more than ever im seeing hood types doing pain killers xtacy xanax n mollys more than ever because they make it seem "cool" now in music while the 80s/90s was the opposite

They used celebrities to promote cigarettes back in the day, people look up to celebrities. People are influenced by them and want to be like them.

Don't you think Nikki Minaj and Kim K influenced more women to get fake asses? Celebrities are a big influence on 'normal' people.

I spent like half my time in college studying the subtle effects media has on people, whether they realize it or not. There are entire books and peer-researched theses on this shyt. For y'all to act like rappers have absolutely no influence on the youth is naive at best and intellectually dishonest at worst.

Stop it with the "blame the parents".

Since the beginning of time, kids were raised by their parents and their surrounding.

In the past, parents had the upper hands. Why ? They had legitimacy and the kids spent most of the time with their parents.

In the modern world, things done changed : parents lost legitimacy, they are overran by technology and the organization of society has the kids spending more time in school, with their friends and in front of a screen than with their parents. In the past your parents were able, most of the time, to control what kind of messages were available to you. Now, with the progress of technology, it's impossible. Also, the mass culture since the 60's is based on rebellion against the parents. If you add the fact that black people in America have a fragilized family structure, you can't say "blame the parents".

A decent society can't promote the diffusion of negative, destructive messages and say to the parents "deal with it".

people aren't saying they have no effect, but yall acting like hearing a song with drug references is the sole reason for someone's choice to do drugs, let alone become an addict, is just as absurd. mask off is not turning kids into addicts as the thread title would like to presume :camby:

one song isn't doing it, but there is a long list of this similar behaviour that is conditioning these kids' into thinking this type of lifestyle is appealing.
this has a greater effect on kids that;
a. have little no parental support at home
b. have older siblings that have been involved with these types of behaviors; and
c. are rebelling against their parents and seeking out support from people in community or other bad influences, that resemble these rappers and entertainers

also, this type of thing isn't new at all. These conversations have been had for decades now. Kids and teenagers are VERY easily duped in to thinking this type of thing is acceptable.

let a rapper's music have more influence over your kids' choices than your parenting brehs. also, any idiot that decides to do drugs because he heard it in future's music, needs to go anyway

with that said

2 cups, toast up with the gang:wow:
Unfortunately, there's a lot more of those types then you realize :francis:

I think its pretty hard to argue that hip hop doesnt have the potential to affect kids negatively. I have a childhood friend says that he got addicted to drugs partly because he heard Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi and Future talk about that shyt :francis:

Granted, hes a goddamn idiot :shaq2: But I doubt his story is uncommon

It isn't the artist's fault. These motherfukkers just trying to make dope music, and you gonna put responsibility on them? :dahell:

Blame the labels

do you not see how A, B, and C are the main contributing factors? that's my whole point, stop blaming music when bigger forces are at play in these kids' lives.
