There is no point to it.
I know a flat Earth believer IRL and asked this same question. All he could ever come up with were vague replies like, “control”, but could never actually explain how lying to people about the shape of the Earth – something the average person doesn’t give a second thought to most of the time – would be able to grant it. I read through this whole thread and not one believer in the Flat Earth nonsense has been able to do better.
The funny thing is that if it were ever able to be proven that the Earth actually was flat (and it won’t, because it’s not), and that information got out to everybody, you know what would happen? Nothing. People would be interested for about a month, two tops, before forgetting about it and moving onto the next thing. The government lies about much more important things and the average person doesn’t care. But try arguing this with any Flat Earth conspiracy theorist and they just don’t hear it.
IMHO, it all just comes down to a narcissistic self-delusion that they know better than everyone else, including the actual people who’ve done research and have proven time and again that the Earth isn’t flat. That’s what fuels it. If the Earth actually were flat, these same people would be saying it’s round. None of this shyt is based in science or common sense, just the need to feel some sort of false superiority by being a contrarian, even if they have to argue against science to do it.
