I see you've done ladder work, whats the highest you've had to go?

and have you ever lost a partner?

have you ever been in a collapse?

these 3 things could keep me away from the job.

Are there firefighter groupies?
I’ve had women come up to the station and drop their number in the mailbox. Or when we’re are community events flirt with me. I’m in a relationship so :yeshrug:

1. A big warehouse fire over the winter I had to go up 90 feet in the ladder and control the water stream. I’m not afraid of heights but it was -15 and windy. I was literally an icicle when I came down, I was encased in ice

2. Lost ? As in die? No thankfully, I pray that never happens. Most of my crew have kids/grandkids …I want them to get home to them. Only thing I come home to is a Beagle :pachaha:

3. Never been in a collapse but was on scene when a FF from a different crew fell thru into a burning basement. a scary couple of minutes, he ended up being fine just a few bruises & scrapes

Is most of your day spent dealing with junkies OD'ing?
Fentanyl is a big problem in my city. It’s affecting everyone…white black Hispanic…rich poor…man woman

I had ODs in luxury condos downtown. Guy had a PhD framed on the wall

ODs in middle class areas of the city with nice lawns and 2023 F350s in the driveway

ODs at hood gas stations at 2 in the morning

Is there any beef with police? Seems like yall are the forgotten stepchild between the two departments. I feel like the qualifications to be a firefighter are more strict than an officer

1) What led you to become a Firefighter?

2) What are some things you think the department could do to encourage more young black men to become firefighters? Community outreach? Mentorship?
1. I had an older cousin who was a firefighter for 32 years. Use to visit his station often cuz it was a few blocks away. Also I couldn’t afford college and this is a decent paying career & stable field if you get on a good department

2. More education about what firefighters actually do.

People think we run into burning buildings all day.. everyday, which just isn’t true. 85% of our calls are medical related. Fires are getting less and less due to better building construction. But, fires are deadlier and burn hotter due to the synthetic materials in our furniture and building materials

But the job isn’t for everybody. Majority of people cannot see what we see on a daily basis

Years ago when I was living in Bk there was a fire in an apt building. Prob 6-7 story prewar apt. Mad fire trucks on the other side of the street from me where the fire was, nobody/nothing blocking the way forward but there is a hose crossing the street on the ground. So I'm creeping forward like 2 mph looking for some sort of instruction as I enter the intersection and out of nowhere a firefighter jumps in front of my car, kicks the bumper and tells me to take a right.

Explain. :skip:

Are you familiar with the plague of fires the Bronx went through in the 70's/80's?

Props to you for the work you do.

I disagree. Most police departments require you to have some form of college or military experience

There are guys I work with, GED education who make 6 figures in the fire service. All I have is a high school diploma :manny:
