is the cancer rate high for FFs in your area? if so, what changes are being implemented to reduce it?
Very high compared to the general population. I know of several dudes in their 30s/40s who have had cancer.

An old school tradition is leaving your gear dirty with soot/grime from fires. It was a pride thing back then, the dirtier your gear..that mean you did the hardest work or went in deepest into the fire. A badge of honor

We now know of all the toxins & carcinogens associated with structure fires. We all take mandatory showers and change into a clean set of clothes and gear after fires. Some departments have saunas so we can detoxify our skin afterwards.

What is the part of the job that you thought you'd never had to do? What task caught you by surprise?
Babysitting downed electrical wires, street lights, traffic signals until the city or power company gets there. Can take 15 minutes or 2 hours depending on how busy they are :snoop:

Do you have plans to pursue advanced degrees or get specialized certs? If not, you should consider it. Those dudes eat. You can teach fire science courses online for extra bread and it helps with career progression.

I have my fire investigator & hazardous materials cert and I’ve thought about becoming a fire academy instructor. There are so many different paths you can take with the fire dept. From fire investigator, hazardous material technician, dive/ water rescue, paramedic instructor etc.

Lot of opportunities for advancement but I don’t really see myself becoming lieutenant or captain. Lot of politics and stuff you gotta deal with as you move up the ranks.

have u ever responded to a gas leak? ever seen carbon monoxide poisoning?

Gas leaks definitely..Daily especially as we move into fall/ winter when people start turning their furnaces and shyt back on.

CO poisoning yes. A whole family, the uncle was running a generator in an attached garage without proper ventilation. Flooded the house with CO, we carry meters

No one died thankfully but they all had to be medically evaluated

Awesome! What’s the nastiest shyt you’ve ever seen? I had dated this guy that was a fire fighter and he said when he first saw a burnt body, he couldn’t eat barbecue for a long time after that. He had to have therapy.

Things I’d rather not bring to the forefront of my memory on a Sunday evening. Respectfully, not a great question to ask a first responder or military

Then again I did say ask me anything :manny:
do you hoop against cops or play softball? who's better?
Basketball were on a 3 year winning streak vs the cops. We usually do a big league around February/March. Cops, Fire, shyt even the city garbage collectors have a team :russ:

Flag football and baseball we go back & forth

Thanks for all that you do OP :salute: Seen firsthand Firefighters break out in action when I had to phone in a laundromat catching fire at my apartments….. Literally an hour after they came by beforehand due to neighbors calling in regarding smoke

*wish I could post vids*

First time they left, I figured everything was cool and got back on the game. An hour later, I heard a small boom and figured somebody threw something heavy into a dumpster till I saw red/orange colors reflecting through my window. I was like :wtf: the fuc…. I know damn well this shyt ain’t catch fire AFTER THESE FIREFIGHTERS JUST LEFT?! :stopitslime:

Me: :snoop: *takes out phone and makes the call*

Was glad I washed earlier that week due to classes starting the following week :whew:
