-Have you ever saved a cat from a tree
-Is there a lot of racism in your workplace? I know firefighters have a lot of built in racists in the profession.
-Have you ever been hurt on the job?
1. No…cats always get down by themselves
2. I’ve heard stories from back in the 70s/80s but never seen or experienced anything myself fortunately
3. I’ve had a knee and back injury that had me on desk duty for a few months while rehabbed. Few minor sprains and bruises here and there
So wait, are the physicals/6 month shyts recurring or one time only?
One time only…After that, physical fitness isn’t mandatory
how much u make a yr? how often do u get raises? can u rock a beard? how about visible tattoos?
1. We top out after 5 years at close to 90k…without overtime. we not talking Driver, lieutenant, captain, chiefs…all make 6 figures after you get seniority.
2. Every year based on our union negotiated contract
3. No beard because we can’t get a good seal on our air mask. When I’m off week or two I grow my shyt out
4. My department is lax on tattoos. It’s guys I work with who have full sleeves, neck and hand tats, I have friends at other departments that have to wear long sleeve or pants even on 90 degree days because they are tatted up. I don’t have any tats and don’t plan on it
Salary?
How heavy is all your gear?
Can you lift 200lbs dead weight man to safety?
Have you ever been burned? How bad?
Do you drive the truck at all?
Describe the worst scene you've witnessed
1. 70 lbs give or take. I’m 6’2 220 so I’m over 300 lbs with full gear
2. My ears got a lil crispy once at an apartment Fire, painful blister formed after a few days
3. Semi regularly..it’s a ton of fun but also the most important job. You have to know your streets/area like the back of your hand. You have to know how to operate hydrants, pumps, hydraulics etc. Your crew is inside fighting the fire and they are depending on you to get them water.
4. Yes..it won’t be a pretty lift but I could do it. We regularly train on victim rescue
5. Won’t get into detail but dead kids always stick with me. I’ve broke down crying after we left the scene. Nothing can prepare you for seeing a lifeless toddler.
is chilling in the firehouse with the guys as chill as it seems? yall be cooking/working out/playing cards n shyt?
After all the training, administrative work, maintenance etc is done the day is yours. Some guys prefer to be left alone and they go chill in a corner reading a book or listening to music. Other times we all watch whatever game is on or go shoot hoops in back of the station. Depending on what station you’re at, it’s a lot of free time. Other stations you’re on calls constantly so you don’t get to enjoy the down time.
Some of the best meals I’ve had in my life were at the firehouse. It’s some guys that can throw down..talking restaurant quality food. Usually it’s a old head with 20+ years on.
How accurate are shows like Station 19 or Chicago Fire if you've seen them? Or just shows and movies pertaining to firefighters?
How do I stop a grease fire?
Very dramatized and unrealistic. Rescue Me is probably the most realistic fire show I’ve seen as far as life in the firehouse
