i was talking to my friend about this. most african slaves were sent to the carib and south america... we know this.

basically, i think every group in america leverages whatever advantage they have, even at the expense of others... which oftentimes is toward african-americans by DESIGN.

many latinos have the benefit of racial ambiguity and even in the cases that they look ostensibly black, will deny or disparage blackness. this is where black americans take offense. can't have a discussion without acknowledging this. one thing you have to consider about AAs here is that cuz of the one drop rule, even those who look clearly mixed/passing have not been historically afraid/ashamed of considering themselves black (with some exceptions). it's a different racial dynamic here.

if there wasn't this concern about "playing both sides of the fence", which MANY PoC do to assimilate/integrate, no one could care if these immigrant groups used elements of the culture here... as its all intertwined throughout the african diaspora anyway.

but honestly, i knew a decent amount of afro-latinos growing up (honduran/garifuna, costa rican, colombian, pr/dr, etc) and most acknowledged their blackness... exception being some dominicans. but my last girlfriend was dominican and considered herself black despite looking mixed, so maybe its an education/denial thing lol.

Just because you're from NY doesn't make you any more educated or an expert on the topic. It is very nuanced, & I'll agree with that.

Something I'll never quite understand is how Jose Lopez from the Bronx is more accepted because he's PR & might look like Tony Touch or Tru Life, but Jose Lopez from Chicago who is Mexican & looks the same way is somehow not according to some. This has been dissected over & over again. There is optics at play & biases. Layered by each region's cultural acceptance.

Fam because jose lopez from the bronx is from pr and his mix is white, black and taino which makes light skin brown. Jose lopez from the chi whose mexican is mixed with white and aztec and also makes a light skin brown but if your eye is trained you can tell the difference

Thats almost like saying australian aboriginals are sub saharan africans. No they not even tho they look similar and they are both black peoples there are genetic and cultural differences already

No its not. Mestizo applies to any indegenious mixture of the Americas. Has nothing to do with Central America. The term was applied by the Spanish for their caste system in all of Latin America. Same as mulatto, zambo, criollo, etc. It was their way of determining societal hierarchy based on racial mixture. You dont know what you're talking about. Ricans like Esai Morales or Erik Estrada can pass for Mexican or any other mestizo Latino because some PRs, depending on region, had a higher % of Taino. Those two would still be considered Mestizo.

:yeshrug:

i NEVER heard the term “Mestizo” regarding to any Caribbean countries

i ONLY heard the used for Mexicans, Central Americans & a tiny bit for South Americans
actually the term was not accepted in Brazil cause Mestizo refers to only indigenous/Spaniard
Brazil took on the term “Pardo” which refers to the trifecta= indigenous/Spaniard + African

i’m not gonna claim to be an expert
but i damn sure ain't gonna be told i don't know what im talking about

Dapped for straight facts. Latinos still use the lousiana creole racial system which was actually invented by the French. Genius play by white supremacy tbh

No one uses the term bro. Almost every latin person I know just says where they from. The arguement is where the term is applicable & its origins. Hell Joe Bataan is from Spanish Harlem....and I know he's not even really Latin.

I know I know, you from NYC. Doesnt mean you're any smarter. If someone Jackson, Mississippi checks Jose becasue he dont look like him, what are you going to say? Your mans is from the Bronx, and you know he has something like 15% afro ancestry? foh.

And my point is, you look at a PR like Tony Touch who looks white af and a Mexican who obviously has Afro Roots, but because one is PR you're ok with them? I've met Afro Mexicans, and Ive been to Guerrero and Veracruz to see a large enough population of black descendants. Whether they ignorant to that fact or not.

its not about being smarter (i never said that)
its about being in or living among all different types of peoples (nyc is the most diverse place in the world)

so hell yeah - a person from Jackson Miss cant check someone race/ethnicity when all he knows is White people & Black people

thats why this topic is so fascinating to me, because its like damn near every non nyc’ers or NorthEast person has absolutely no clue on this topic YET these same people feel they have a right to make an opinion

and no disrespect to you - but the fact you keep bringing up Tony Touch & other nuyoricans with lite skin complexion dose not take away from their African bloodline
complexion, hair texture & eye color dosnt determine one race - scientist say facial & body features are more prevalent for that

I'm bringing up those Nuyoricans because you're blanketing them all the same. Conversley, on the opposite specteum you do it with Mexcians. I live in Houston, & I know how different they all are even amongst each other.

:mjlol: they don't want to claim black, they are black. This whole attempt to adapt exclusive ethno nationalism for black americans and define other peoples blackness is retarded. There is no such thing as "pure" black american and "black american culture" is heavily rooted in cultures and traditions from outside the US.
How so?

Black Americans are descendants of American slaves. We built America and created or own culture, just like Black Islanders and Afro latinos have their own culture.

Hip hop and Black American vernacular, which fat joe and the poster @CubanVoodooBreh i quoted is wanting to be apart of was created by Black Americans in America. That is not traditional African culture.

Hip hop is not the tradition of any other country or culture of people and neither is Black American vernacular, especially since most other groups Native language is not even English.

The term Black was also created by Black Americans (while looking for a name other than N*gger, colored, and Negro which white Americans were calling) as like I said, Black is an English word and most other peoples language is not English. They were just called African until they started moving to the u.s. in droves and lumped in with us or wanted to be included. It was only then that it began to change to mean "of African descent".

Come with facts please, or dont come at all :queen:
