@NVious Quick review...

It's definitely the most different thing he's done. He said he was bored of the Weather albums that he could do in his sleep, and wanted to do something stripped down and raw, since that's how he felt after losing his son's mother and trying to be a single dad in his 40's to a young son.

The album definitely reflects that. It's definitely a fall/winter album. It's not in-your-face sad. The only explicitly "sad songs" are Won't Give Up The Danger and Taylor Made Suit. But most of the songs here do have little bars sprinkled throughout about death, loss, grief, but having to persevere. I think the last part is kind of the key. It never sounds totally bleak or hopeless.

I get a real theme here of life is fukked up but you have to keep living. The joint that Khrysis produced ends with him saying I'll make myself a great day, the day is what you make it. Also, I can't recall the exact bars yet, but there's a line on the Nottz joint about expecting things to be bad in the future, but kind of being prepared for it. It's almost like the philosophy of stoicism--which is kind of about preparing yourself for the inevitable chaos of life, but trying to live in the moment and not dwell on the anxiety of bad things that haven't happened yet.

There's another bar on another song where he says something like my life is beautiful and truly tragic. I think it was deliberate that he said "and tragic" and not "but tragic." So yeah. I don't wanna ramble too much. A lot of people will say this is a downer of an album, but personally I hear a lot of rays of sunshine shining through too.

The production is super different. I wasn't expecting my least favorite joints to be from Alchemist, Daringer, and Animoss. I think Nottz, EARDRUM, Mr. Green, Sebb, and Ev himself himself really stole the show here on the beats. The Khrysis joint is a banger too, but I wish they'd kept the full song and not cut it to an interlude.

The guest rappers are my least favorite part, and they're usually my favorite part of Ev's album. None are bad, but I don't think any of them add a ton to the songs. Delay The Issue might have been in my top 3 on here if it had another Ev verse instead of Fly Anakin.

And lastly, the sequencing feels purposely stitched together and kind of jarring. It's not the smoothest transitions from song to song, but it sounds like it was designed the way. And a lot of songs are just two-tracked without doubled vocals or adlibs.

I'm curious what @subletteafterdark has to say.

I like this a lot. I’ve been listening to it all day while I’ve been working. It’s like mood music for grown up hip hop fans. I don’t think I’ll end up liking this as much as Cats & Dogs but it might end up being my second favorite.

This is very different than anything he has done and probably anything that is out now. It is hard to explain but it’s kind of like stream of conscious rhymes over eerie minimalist beats. Props to Ev, he’s been one of my favorite MC’s the last 10-15 years.

Good review.

Yeah, I mean there’s time for more music, but I think Cats & Dogs will go down as my favorite album he’s done. I think that’s his most definitive work so far.

This is a solid project from Ev, definitely like the stripped down production even if I like him over harder shyt because his laidback style compliments it well.

I know he doesn't like Weather Or Not but I really liked that project. Had a nice mix of styles and solid production throughout

Man this feels like the most uncut raw version of Ev we've seen. Feels like an underground mixtape especially with the scratching and the samples throughout.

Some of these tracks really hit me, I've had a rough week at work and this has made me really look at myself and own some of the decisions I've made.

Its hard to believe I've been listening to Ev for 20 years and it still feels like the best is yet to come. His confidence in his honest and open approach seems to be at an all time high with no fukks given, at the same time it feels like one big stream of consciousness.

I need to spend a lot more time with this album though.

Moving on Up sounds like some shyt Premo would give Jeru or Group Home in 94/95.

shyts raw.

Album sounding very dope. I like the approach Ev has took. Sometimes his music can be a lil too dry.
