Every time an ignorant person says bicycling and public transit would never work in America like it does in Europe…

And my main problem with these disingenuous threads is always that bicycle is the main way they want people to travel. They never talk about increasing subways, light rail, buses, trolleys. Bikes are always the answer.

I actually used to commute by bike. It sucked. It sucked on rainy days. It sucked on hot days. It sucked on windy days.
I literally wrote PUBLIC TRANSIT in the thread title.

get an e-bike and 12 miles ain't that much once you ride consistently.

The route I take to work isn’t good for bikes. I stay in a semi rural area & the school I work at is somewhat close to the city. No bike lanes or street lights for most of my route, & I have to take the busiest street in my county.
I'm 15 mi (30 miles round trip) Takes me 1 hr just cruising. By the time I get there I'm relaxed, not stressed and the ride home is great too because then I get to de-stress.

Sucks when it's hot because then I have to shower at work, (we have very nice facilities, full gym, etc plus very light traffic because we're government, not a public building) when it's not hot, like yesterday it was 52 degrees, I didn't even break a sweat.

Hell I had a foot race in April or March and it was like 38 degrees when the race started. At the end of it, I was warm (took my gloves off during) but I wasn't sweating.

I know I'm getting older because now I like that shyt. I hate peeling my damn shirt off, drenched in sweat.

I've ridden in the rain, the wind, the windy rain. It sucks, but I've gotten over it. I have a rain suit I put in my back pack, I'm completely dry when I get home. Once you do the hard shyt and make it, it's like "ok I've done this, how much harder can it get?" I guess I've yet to be broken. But I understand.

Yea I’m not trying to shower while at work. You can have that

I do 20 miles a day and I’m :flabbynsick:

:hhh:

Congrats :pachaha:
Couldn’t be me

See this is the point.

It’s not that people are against biking or using public transit.

It’s that we don’t make it viable or desirable.

I live 12 miles from my job. Ain’t no way in the fukk I’m using a bike every day. fukk that
You should see the amount of people coming in to the Bay Area from all directions in the morning. It’s not uncommon for people who live 1-2hrs away to commute here. When I leave to go to Tahoe at 4am there’s at least a mile or two of traffic coming. Those people ain’t getting on no train.

Brooklyn keeps on taking it.

Just admit you don’t know history.

it’s all ignorance.

People assume something will not work because they are not used to it.

Once you put something new in place it takes one generation to adjust.

For example the kids growing up in nyc today love bike lanes cause they are growing up using them. Their parents on the other hand hate bike lanes cause they are from the generation where bike lanes were non existent.

When you change something humans naturally accept it

Imagine driving for 2 hours to go to work.

I’m taking the train. At least you can be productive or take a extra needed nap.

Driving 2 hours gotta be alert and deal with dikk heads on the road

Too many sprawling cities in America.

Europe works because we’re naturally smaller, our roads weren’t designed for massive cars either, so safety is also an issue.

Also too many oil lobbyists. I remember when I was in Arizona and they had only just OKed the building of a tram style service, but it was super controversial due to to debates going on in the city.

This guy has explained it all:

Why do Americans act like sprawling cities can’t be transformed into more dense areas?

the internet
interesting thread
im a huge cyclist and have been commuting for 10+ years

it makes more sense for certain cities

we should probably focus on those cities first as a proof of concept and then the rest of the fatties will see how doable it is

I can’t that’s why I tailored my life around not doing that. I had one job that was an hour drive away and I hated it. Getting on a train extra early in the morning with a bunch of randos does not sound appealing. My boy sends me vids of him on the Bart everyday. Dudes slumped over with needles hanging and all. You wanna take a nap on the Bart? You gotta make sure your bags are strapped to you. God forbid there’s trouble at the next terminal. They’ll stop that train for hours having you get off and wait for another or take a bus. I’ve ridden the subway where that shyt was fukking packed. I road an Uber or lyft after all that. I’m good.

And you and your supporters barely talk about it.
You and your people continue to talk about bicycling everywhere.

Imagine thinking a place that is a 2 hr drive isn't going to be closer to 3 with mass transit. :pachaha:
