Every time an ignorant person says bicycling and public transit would never work in America like it does in Europe…

interesting thread
im a huge cyclist and have been commuting for 10+ years

it makes more sense for certain cities

we should probably focus on those cities first as a proof of concept and then the rest of the fatties will see how doable it is
My money is in someplace in the Midwest or The Rust Belt. Pittsburgh is probably gonna be the one. But Buffalo and Cleveland are good options too.

Wherever these new tech companies cluster, there's gonna be the tax base and the Singapore/Netherlands mentality.

If it were going to happen in the South, Austin is compact enough.. But the zoning laws and real estate folks maximize their rents make street level retail hard to do.

It should happen in the Bay, but homeowners there like their 7 figure single family homes.

Folks do be riding every day though.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Well it won’t work. On Long Island they took a whole lot of bus service away. Getting to my job by bus is a 2.5 hour commute including a 2 mile walk, vs a 25 minute drive.

So waste 4 hours a day, walk, and sit on a bus with loud smelly people, or drive in a peaceful, leather appointed environment? That’s an easy decision
U must live in Suffolk County.

it’s all ignorance.

People assume something will not work because they are not used to it.

Once you put something new in place it takes one generation to adjust.

For example the kids growing up in nyc today love bike lanes cause they are growing up using them. Their parents on the other hand hate bike lanes cause they are from the generation where bike lanes were non existent.

When you change something humans naturally accept it
Ok please explain to me how I’ll carry 2 snowboards and pair of skis to with all my other equipment to Tahoe. That’s would require 3 separate huge bags to carry that shyt. I have a roof rack with a lock that holds all of it. What if I wanna stop and get some food and a beer after a great day of boarding? I gotta get off with those bags and board another train or bus to get to that destination. That’s like $5k in gear. I’d be a walking lick :russ: I grew up taking public transportation, and I hated it. I went to a different hs than my friends and had to take a train and two different busses to go see em. 15min car ride or 1 1/2 hours on two busses and a train? Some of us love the convenience, luxuries, and safety our cars give us. Publics transportation just doesn’t work for me and a lot of people around who are pretty active.

Jesus.

Why do you think that the push for better public transit and bike lanes means you can’t have a car?

Seriously. Why the fukk do you think we are saying that both can’t exist?

Both can and should be viable.

You’re the one asking how you’re gonna carry ski equipment like people are demanding you use a bike for everything.

:why:

If you rely on public transportation you are subjected to the schedules and routes they create.
Why would anyone give up their cars for that?
No one is asking you to completely give up your car.

And what scheduling problem? If you have a good transit system the scheduling becomes vastly superior to cars anyway. Switzerland has trains going to every part of the country (even rural areas) every 8 minutes.

Everyone holds up The Netherlands as the shining example of cycling infrastructure and public transit.

And rightfully so.

But you guys do know they have cars in The Netherlands. Right?

They didn’t just get rid of them entirely.
And nobody would want to get rid of cars entirely in the United States either.

I can’t speak for everyone but what I would argue for is a restructuring where walkability, public transit and cycling are prioritized, and not the car.

The car should be an accessory for certain things. But we shouldn’t cater to it at every turn.

Florida is a good place for bicycling. Great weather all year . Cities are spread out so a nice bike is worth it.

this is more evidence that doing traffic and car related infrasture is inferior to rail systems, this supports our arguments not yours.
This was the result of creating turnabouts to manage automobile traffic. Nothing to do with subways or monorails.
This is absolutely not what that was about
