Whole threads on here about mass layoffs in the tech world and folks think people won’t go take those jobs at twitter?
True, but Tech as a industry has high perks and salary. I always thought that the bigger companies (Facebook, Twitter, Apple, and Microsoft) hired a lot of people to keep them from working in smaller companies and competitive startups. Basically it's a industry of highly skilled overachievers who are use to high compensation. Sort of like finance. There is a culture of workers going from one company to another for salary bumps and improved benefits. Tech also has the strongest startup culture of any industry.
Musk came in fukked up. He’s use to treating his workers at Tesla and Space X differently. However the majority of workers in both companies are different. In both companies he is dealing with engineers who believe in his vision. These are also industries with high startup costs so he has fewer competitors. His engineers are not going to leave and start a battery/car company or start a rocket ship company. Plus they believe in his company’s goals. The other type of worker he is use to working with are manufacturing line workers. As long as he can avoid a union in his companies he can and does treat them damn near anyway he wants.
Twitter’s reputation is trash. Tech Workers, if not hired, have a long tradition of making their own profitable startups. Musk just promised his workers the equivalent of their own company’s seed money and there are a legion of competitor companies that will hire those workers too. He basically fukked up.
Also, to people saying “just hire people in India and China”. Both those countries are full of hacker who will reverse engineer your code if given to much access and China’a government will confiscate your assets any time they want. You can deal with them as vendors of specific parts and providers of specific services. However, there is a very good reason why tech companies do not normally ship jobs overseas.
