Every arc/movie this whole series outside of Goku Black and Universe 6 to an extent, all the way back to Battle of the Gods, has pretty much followed the same pattern of:

1. Goku goes first, gets his ass kicked.
2. Vegeta does something cool, but still ends up getting his ass kicked.
3. Goku pulls something out of his ass and wins/ends the threat.

I don't know why anyone expected anything different.

The plot saved them against Golden Frieza (Whis rewinding time), Goku Black (Zeno showing up), and the Top (Jiren really only lost because of plot, he would've easily won if he didn't wait till the last minute to actually try).

Of course it is, and that should be expected since Super is taking place before the end of Z. So everything still has to be in place for that

This is why they need to skip to the end of Z already, so we can get some real stakes
