Ok, I'm an Alex supporter but the train has come to an end for Alex in San Fran. Alex has played well the last couple of years and he at least has proven he can be a capable starter in the NFL. I think he's done in San Fran after this season but this dude will not be homeless or even close to out of the NFL, I can think of at least 5 or 6 teams where he would be a considerable upgrade to their teams current starting QB. So he'll find work, he may even score a big payday somewhere. Alex protected the ball and that comes with it's ups and downs, he's accurate on short to mid range throws and he is deceptively athletic, and for the most part makes good decisions, he's not a gamebreaker but he can show glimses of great play, but he definitely won't bury you.
As someone who has watched Alex Smith his whole career, I don't hold that look he had on his face in those shots in the game against him, dude has been a great teamate his entire career and he had more than couple of opportunities to leave even in the bad years, I just took it as a guy who realized his time on the team was up.
Kaep has something special though and with Harbaugh as the coach, he has the potential to be a very good if not great QB, guy has amazing athleticism, a strong arm and he is willing to take risky throws and can make them more often than not. But I'm not surprised, remember we drafted him in the second and traded up to get him, so it was eventual, it just happened sooner than many including myself expected.
But in short, I don't really feel sorry for Alex Smith, I appreciate his time on the 49ers as a starter and I would gladly have him as a backup for our team next year should he decide to stay (he's not a big burden for us cap wise) and I wish him all the best should he leave. He's a smart young man and he'll be fine, I mean he's 28, he'll be fine.
