Do graphics even matter?

I think there is more of an obsession over graphics in the pc sphere than on consoles. The master race has always been about having the best graphics.

Now we see ps4 heads doing it to, against the X1.

shyt I always wanted every game with the highest quality graphics possible. I don't really feel that way anymore. I don't know what changed

I can rattle off a bunch of SNES games that crush current gen games. Graphics ain't nothin' but shades and textures. The best games have a strong story that makes you care about the characters with strong gameplay to support it.

Those games you would name are some of the best looking games of their time though..

What they had was great art direction, not necessarily better graphics than the competition. Graphics isn't what makes a game great. Graphics SUPPORT a great game. What keeps you coming back to the game over and over is the gameplay and story, and I would say that a strong story will keep gamers coming back to a mediocre game more so than graphics.

that's not even really true though. the most popular PC games aren't graphical powerhouses. plus it's the platform most of these 'retro platformers' (Shovel Knight, Rogue Legacy, etc) come out on first. and then a lot of those games get shunned by console gamers because of their graphics

I think part of that is because the PC is constantly making slow incremental progress on graphics, while 'console generations' are expected to have these great leaps in graphics. it's expected that 'next gen' games will have 'next gen' graphics. that was the point I made earlier about the move from 8 bit to 16 bit: the 'next' console generation has always been about better graphics

They did. I'm sure at that time those graphics were top notch. Nobody is saying gameplay doesn't matter or that graphics can redeem a bad playing game.

I kinda agree, but the pro pc argument has always included better graphics (along with modding).

But you're right, new gen consoles are all about graphics.

World of Warcraft
Counter Strike:GO
DOTA 2
Hearthstone


some of the best selling Steam games last year where games like Terraria and Rust and shyt
none of them are graphic intense or graphic driven games

We've had the ABILITY to have the best graphics as its an OPTION if a gamer wants to go that route.

This. I don't see Shovel Knight or Little Inferno getting praised for its kickass graphics.

I think it's this: if a highlight of your game is graphics, the graphics HAVE to be on point. I rebuilt my computer (from processor to mobo and everything in-between) over Skyrim. My old build could play anything else on Ultra Super-Dee-Duper Supreme, but Skyrim looked like the shyt was made with Play-Doh. But if a game is built on hearts and starts and magical clovers (think Mario games), I'm not going to notice all that much.

I shouldve just mentioned super c or double dragon in my comparison cause they always nitpick over the smallest things in this forum. The whole point was no game from back then will look half as good as anything now. Back then it was always gameplay as the selling point of a game. Now its whether the graphics fags get 1080 p and 60 fps with the same old rehashed fps. Give me some more traditional platformers and RPGs. Graphics are so good now you will only notice slight differences between games. I'm more worried about innovation in the gamed dynamics...not the fukking way they look. "Omg game x has 20 percent more lighting effects than game y"

Yeah, that is why I don't understand why cats so hyped for PS4 and X1. Its just prettier graphics. I want developers to use their fukking imaginations again and design something artistic to last through the ages.

The real truth about this is, why plenty of cats say this shyt, not enough of ya'll actually buy this shyt and support said argument unlike the tried, tired and true titles and play-styles that are milked to death.

It's a case by case basis for me. Sometimes the graphics are the sole reason I enjoy a game. Sometimes the graphics don't matter and sometimes the graphics can actually take away from the experience

you use Battlefield 4 as an example. Perfect. Thats the point of the "PC Master Race" is that Ps4 is talking shyt to xbox 1 about performance over a game but we on the "PC Master Race" side are just because really both games look/play like shyt compared to the PC version.

But you are completely missing the point (as usual) that most the popular games on PC are not graphic intensive at all.
