graphics seem to only matter as a starting point in arguing one way or another about your fav console. They can matter, I mean Im not gonna lie, I got the LOU Remake and GTA5, but they dont seem to matter to me all that much. Id rather have a game that controls really well and keeps me engaged. I still game on n64/snes/sega/etc.

I'll play the original donkey Kong country over heavy rain any day. Gameplay trumps all.

This. I don't see Shovel Knight or Little Inferno getting praised for its kickass graphics.

I think it's this: if a highlight of your game is graphics, the graphics HAVE to be on point. I rebuilt my computer (from processor to mobo and everything in-between) over Skyrim. My old build could play anything else on Ultra Super-Dee-Duper Supreme, but Skyrim looked like the shyt was made with Play-Doh. But if a game is built on hearts and starts and magical clovers (think Mario games), I'm not going to notice all that much.

Graphics matter quite a bit. At least art direction and animation. If a game looks ugly, it probably won't be very fun to play. In fact I can't think of an ugly game that I like. From Dead Space 2 to Journey to Portal 2 to The Last of Us, all of my favorite games last gen also looked good. Only exception I can think of is the Souls games, but those games still had a great art direction, which is part of graphics.

And resolution and framerate also matter and make gameplay better. High resolution will let you see more detail in the distance, i.e. in CoD you can spot enemies and head shot them across the map.

And play a game in 30fps and then play that same game in 60fps. It'll feel much better in 60fps.

gameplay > graphics all day anyday..

but these days with how powerful consoles are, you can't expect a game with horrible graphics. it's part of the generation.

i've been playing ps1 games recently on my PC (Crash bandicoot) and man that game is fun, even though the game looks like crap. But at the time when the game came out, it had one of the best graphics.

You can't gimp a game and then hail gameplay > graphics cause it is important for a game to look good. The developers still gotta try and use the console to it's full advantage.

No excuse for a game to look poor on a PS4/XONE and PC.

But this doesn't prove your point, Uncharted 2 was a graphical powerhouse too when it came out and yet it's one of the best games of last gen.

The Last of Us same thing, amazing game with great gameplay and it had great graphics too.
Gears of War for the Xbox 360 was a graphical showpiece when it launched and is hailed as one of the best TPS last gen.

Bioshock 1 is another critically acclaimed title that had graphics that were insane at launch. Remember the first scene?? You in the water??

Heavy Rain doesn't hide what type of game it is so using it's graphics as a critique to say it's just graphics over substance is silly because it IS a movie like game: It didn't promise to be something else.

Do you view games like The Walking dead in a similar matter?? They're both similar except the walking dead has worse graphics.
pretty much every game has good graphics now. I loved uc2 but couldn't stand hr. Found it to boring as hell. Even with all the cut scenes in mgs2 and 4 they were still very fun and entertaining games. I was able to play the first walking dead cause my friend shared his ps plus and I just don't like those kind of games. I definetly never would've payed for either of those myself.

Pretty much. Most of the time when i see this topic comes up people start naming games that supposedly represent the "gameplay" side of the spectrum as if they don't look good either. There's not too many games that are outright amazing and have shytty ass graphics.

Man people need to be careful what they wish for

There's been a shift towards graphics >>>> gameplay, when I was growing up gameplay was always first. You can't make shyt pretty and hide the fact that it's shyt. I don't feel any more "immersed" in a game than I did back when I was playin SNES and genesis
I would argue the move from 8 bit to 16 bit had a lot to do with graphics. multi-scrolling backgrounds, mode 7, larger sprites, more colors on screen from a much larger palette.... and "blast processing" :mjlol:

Donkey Kong Country's graphics and art style was top notch for that time..shyt even looks better than some PS1 games...
Game is fukking amazing. I spent so much time playing it with my boys. I remember nintendo power sending me a vhs of the development team making the game. I wish I still had it...the case was green with the jungle theme.
