Brandy has a better discography than Beyonce but never gets her dues. We been listening to them same brandy songs for over 20 years now...but she wasn't hot in the social media age of music so she didn't create a 'standom' -- Beyonce blew up right along with social media and greater 'Entertainment Television' with more sophisticated music marketing which we can't ignore. Same with Usher...he at least has a classic album (two IMO) but then Chris Brown and these other nasal singers came along and suddenly, Usher doesn't have a 'classic' album or songs?

I'm not going to discredit her, but I personally find a lot of her songs juvenile and without real meaning, even to Beyonce; I think there are a lot of people with way more classic albums in the same genre who don't even get mentioned just because they don't have the 'fan power'
Lol Brandy had a major record deal, network television, movies and a Barbie Doll. Let’s not pretend that she didn’t have a strong machine relative to her time period.

Now we’ve reached the point of well Beyonce is only popular because of her devoted fans. Guess what a lot of them think she classics. People don’t have to agree but it’s hilarious that you can say she’s hugely popular and totally dismiss that she could be considered to have classics based on you level of like for her.

This is said about every era...than 20 and 30 yrs later you hear the stuff on radio and it's called classic iconic hits

Whoever grew up with their music will forever have nostalgia for it no matter what

Every age group for eternity will forever say that's my jam to whatever the hell was bumping in high school for them

The thing about "standards" is that they don't become "standards" unless: (1) they become the de jour go-to tracks for covers and remakes or; (2) they are cemented years later in branch genres as go-tos. Its also incredibly dependent on the climate in the genre. Would you consider On & On a neo-soul standard? Bills, Bills Bills? Brown Sugar? They've all been listed as "standards" but its incredibly subjective to the point of absurdity.

Who has listed those songs as standards??

And you answered your own question by asking this question...who has covered those songs?
The true Standards transcend the genres, to the point where artists in other genres cover them -
like most of Dionne's songs.

Really doe: the truest tests to see if a song is a Standard is if

1) it's a staple people go on talent shows/contests to sing, and or...
2) a pro singer will go cover it and take it seriously.

Like I said, Beyoncé only got two songs imo that could maybe be considered in that realm, and she been at this chit 2 decades. Her brand is stronger than her catalogue, and it isn't wrong to say that.

Beyoncé was part of a girl group that sold 8 million in 99 and 6 million in 2000. Beyoncé’s solo album dropped in 03 and sold 11 million worldwide with 3 #1 billboard hits.

And y’all nikkas saying she blew up clause of social media
:mindblown:

Yeah, and she had a completely failed solo attempt (or two) during that time and no one was thinking about her as a soloist till CIL came out - CIL came out at the onset of social media...

Let's not re-write history. She had a huge media push due to 'greater entertainment television' which is what I said, and her push as continued via social media and the rise of single minded 'standoms'...her brand is top tier but her discography is weak and she's the most obvious 'manifestation' of everyone before her who was successful at the level she aspired to.

How does being apart of a group automatically make her iconic? I'm sure the members of The Supremems and The Miracles not named Smokey and Diana would have a lot to say. Destiny's Child are hardly considered the most iconic of even modern girl groups. Most put Spice Girls and TLC before them.

Either way, arguing about my opinion is a waste of both our time.

70s went from Marvin, Donny, Curtis, Aretha, Gladys, to the 80s with Michael, Prince, Whitney, Anita, and Luther to the 90s with Mariah, Toni, Babyface etc..the music was still elite. Music fell off around 98 especially RnB

Beyoncé is one of the most hardworking superstars ever whose music, for some odd reason, has become very niche

Artists die to find a lane. That’s part of the equation. The problem is her fans compare her to artists whose music was accessible

Beyoncé’s music doesn’t resonate with straight males at all

Brandy has a better discography than Beyonce but never gets her dues.'

People refer to Brandy as 'The Vocal Bible' on the daily.

Do you not realize how successful she was? She was a phenomenon when she came out. She was THE GIRL, and fully celebrated. She made millions and people are still enjoying her music to this day. What other dues is she owed? Is this comment because she is not still in the spotlight?

Beyonce is a legend. Up there with all the greatest ever.

But vocally she is probably the least talented of all the legendary songtresses on the level. Nobody will ever say she can out sing, Mariah, Whitney, Aretha etc.
And thats really the reason people tend to be a lil critical of her despite of her overall success and tons of classic records. Realistically her Talent should have kept her at a Janet or Diana level of icon(still very highly respected and successful but not the once in a generation talents vocally). But she somehow managed to surpass that to reach the upper echelon with Aretha and Mariah type singers. But it never felt like she belonged.
