She's right. Dionne came from the era where talent carried you and the people had to feel you as they made you. There was no hype machine or extra shyt. Just her voice and the music. Beyonce needed a whole lot of extra shyt besides her average singing to get her where she's at. Talent didn't get Beyonce to the top.

And yeah, Beyonce might be remembered but her music won't.
Hype machines definitely did exist, as did a bit of gimmicking, depending on who you were and what genre.
Super-star producer-artist studios existed and some of the top labels produced artists like the South Korean government does.

Donny Hathaway's entered the music industry in 1967. This Christmas was released in 1970, which is one of the best Christmas songs to date.

Stevie Wonder entered the music industry in 1961, as an 11 year old child. Nine years later, he composed one of Smokie Robinson's hit songs, Tears of a Clown. Stevie's My Cherie Amour was recorded in 1967/68 & released in 1969.

Some people start late. Bill Withers was still shopping his demo tapes (in his 30s) & didn't get a shot until 1970. Ain't No Sunshine came out in 1971.

Beyonce has had plenty of time & her discography is too cluttered with BS lyrics like "twirl on my haters." She has some really good songs, but she does not have anywhere near enough songs to justify her cult following.
I think you're missing out on R&B consumers as a whole want more than just singing over a track, and have for decades.
This is a pretty similiar motif to common criticisms of hip-hop fans.

Lalah Hathway, Jill Scott, Robert Glasper, and Ledisi would go platinum every single album if *just* singing and pure musical talent was what sold.

But it isn't.

So in a business where selling records was the end goal. There was no extra shyt? They just invested money to make records and hoped the artist connected and made money for the label?

Use some common sense here man. Also please don’t pivot to the level of marketing then vs. now.

Be careful guys, its too easy and too early to dismiss her.

Many artists that were considered "pop" and "trash" or "lacking substance" became viewed as icons by later generations. Beetles are a perfect example. At the time, music reviewers refered to them as talentless and an abomination to music.

Im not a Beyonce fan, but i would not be nearly as shocked as some of yall woukd be if the next generation or 2 shows her music love or watch her performances in awe
:what:

Beyonce been out since 98. 20+ years of music from her. She damn near 40 years old:dead:

Beetles came out in what, the 60s? By the 80s, they damn sure weren't considered an abomination to music. Beyonce's just doesnt make powerful or memorable music. Zero classic songs or albums. She makes music for angry women who are fake feminists and think they're bosses.

Anyone with ears knows beyonce is more hype than substance. Dionne is saying what everyone who isnt her stan already knows.

She's right.

I can listen to a Dionne Warwick song from the 60s and it still bangs tell me a song from the last 10 years we'll be doing the same for in 6 yrs let alone 40 yrs.
I mean people see Beyonce as 'iconic' with no iconic songs. Beyonce is the emperors new clothes of music artists.

I've said it once and I'll say it again Rihanna is a better artist than Beyonce. (keyword artist not singer) With a better catalogue of songs.

Music is more disposable than ever now. I guess thats the speed of life these days but it means there is no longevity for a lot of these artists coming up.

Shes right. Just because millenials tweet Kweeen and Slay doesnt mean her music is classic material

you do realize that this is just YOUR opinion right?

IMMIGRANT TETHERS
look, I get shytting on Beyonce is the trend on here and I don't even listen to her music, but some of you are smoking crack if you think she doesn't have any timeless songs. lol. so what does that make Dionne's legacy? Seriously, how many timeless songs does Dionne have that black folks from my generation (1990) can recite? Growing I swear I was the only nikka that heard the name Dionne Warwick.
I see some of you listing Rihanna. lol
