Dionne Warwick not convinced that Beyonce is a classic or iconic artist with a classic catalogue

I'm several decades younger than Stevie Wonder & Donny Hathaway, yet I still love there songs. You shouldn't have to look through the eyes of a specific generation to have a song penetrate. The vast majority of mainstream r&b lacks soul, originality or somewhat decent lyrics...or a combination of all three.
My point is, a large number of fans feel the music of today just like Warwick feels the music of her era. She says Bey has no iconic music. Trust me, they disagree!

she will have people write her ballads later on in her life... let her turn 60 first....

althought I agree, her music is trash because neyo and frank ocean are trash

People call anything classic just cuz without any clear definition.

Classics are usually benchmark albums in their respective genres. Albums from years passed that are recognized today as game changers for their time period.

There's albums that are universally recognized as classics no matter how much you hate or love an artist.

Thriller, Confessions, don't be cruel, purple rain, Songs in the key of life, miseducation of Lauryn hill, Voodoo, etc
Lemonade is pretty universally recognised. Just not on the Coli :mjlol:
I've heard brehs on this site say My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy isn't a classic album even though it fundamentally changed hip-hop sonically.

I think mass critical acclaim is the best measure of a classic. :yeshrug:

Of course she is. beyonce is a novelty artist, she appeals to gays and women. that's it.

I agree that her songs will be played forever just like "baby got back", "vogue" and "macarena"...they're novelty songs to have fun with and not to be taken seriously.
And then you have opinions like this. Which are sort of out of left-field and are moreso simply hate than any real examination of music as a whole.

It's an aura thing. After the success of 8701, and then Confessions, Usher was the biggest male solo artist. Girls in school were carving lyrics from My Boo into their desks; those songs were on the radio constantly. Beyonce has been so much about marketing, not organically getting people to love her music and be obsessed by it. Frankly, I'd say Justin Timberlake's first few solo albums also had a bigger splash than Beyonce's solo work. I can sing Justified front to back. I can't name more than 3 songs on any Beyonce album.
I can rap Jay Electronica's Style Wars front-to-back but outside of Sexyback I can't sing a single JT track.
You're conflating your immense interest in Justin Timberlake, and lack of interest in Beyonce w/ the general music-consuming public.

It's almost undebateable that Beyonce fits the actual definition of an icon. What this is more about is a criticism of the type of music of today that is most successful.

Truth. Beyoncé's catalogue doesn't really hold up like that.
She only has 2 songs that could be rightfully be called "standards",
and that's not good for an R&B artist with her tenure.
The thing about "standards" is that they don't become "standards" unless: (1) they become the de jour go-to tracks for covers and remakes or; (2) they are cemented years later in branch genres as go-tos. Its also incredibly dependent on the climate in the genre. Would you consider On & On a neo-soul standard? Bills, Bills Bills? Brown Sugar? They've all been listed as "standards" but its incredibly subjective to the point of absurdity.
